N 1 N .... Cl c. en " ;g w Z W ..J U > U AME S a d d l e b a c k - - - - - - - - - - -......- - - - - - / by Tom Corley IRVINE, CAL., Sept. 10,1972 - Today must of been the happiest day of 17 year·old racer Greg Lee's life as he won the Coast Moto Cycle Jawa/CZ 250cc and wrapped up the AME CZ Series, nipping out 125 In tenned iate racer Jack Hazard in a stunning battle for Series poin ts that ended so close that Lee only topped Hazard by two-points! Both of these series points leaders did a ~eck of ajob in all of the six CZ Series . races, and this last race was the big judgement day_ While Hazard glided through the 125 Intennediate competition with three straight wins, Greg Lee wound up with two firsts and a sluggish fifth. Lee came on top when the points totaled up, but today Greg raced on one of his other CZ's that saved his life when his nonnal reed-valved CZ had trouble in the early morning. Shifting problems meant bad news for awhile until Lee's good buddy Scott Leason trucked on down back to Greg's pad to bring back an older CZ that needed a little modifying done before race time. Luckily it worked out, and in return Lee gained a new CZ from AME! Having to put up with speedy winner Lee in the 250 Junior class must have been dam hard for second and third place winners David Donheo (Bul) and Eric Watral (Yam). MX at Lake Delores--------------------------------- by Peg Cheney LAKE DELORES, CAL_, Sept. 3, 1972 - Partially cloudy skies and a track gotten in to good shape after Fridays flash flood conditions helped Lake Delores motocross line up to its growing reputation of Fun Spot of the Desert. First to try out racing backwards on the track were the minibikes with Bob Mauls (Yam) taking all three motos, and John Vigil (Hon) second; Eric Kehoe (Yam), No.3 held the' same position as his number plate. This track saw the fair sex racing for the first time here. Stacy and Ponland Wright made a good showing for themselves_ The 1.00 Novice class and Wayne Close (Yarn) all the way, with GaryStoops (Yarn) and Aaron Adams, battling it out for second and third. Kim Byers, an aspiring Desert Daisy, handled herself quite well for her first race. The 125 Novice gang brought the Kehoes back in the limelight with Rick taking first; Joe second, and Tip Allred, third; all on DKWs. 100-125-175 Am-Ex ran together with some really tigh t races. Jimmy Jacks (Yam) fougl1t his way to first, Greg Hawks (DKW) was next, placillg Pat Noble (Yam) in third overall position and first 175. Next up were the 250 Novices, with some running their first race and hanging "right in there for some breathtaking starts. One first-timer, Danny Wells (Yam) charged in to third on his first moto and held it. In all three motos most any part of the track had a challenge going. Without a doubt, the most thrilling was between Paul Tavares (CZ) and Butch Tarvin (Suz) for first and second, finishing in that order, while Fred Griego (Suz) pulled off a third overall. The 250 Am-Ex had the spectators holding their breath with quite a cliff-hanger developing between Bob Porter (Yam), Brad Bridges (Suz) and Dane Cheney (Yarn). Bridges led the first moto but had to stop for repairs and Cheney took the lead only to have the same problem. Both were soon baCK in action but Porter took the first moto. The next two we·re Cheney and Bridges pulling away to take a moto apiece. The final tally gave Cheney first, followed by Porter and Bridges. Open Novices hadJ. D. Keeton (Hus) taking all three motos with a battle of the points for second and third by Gaylon Willardson (CZ) and Tom Cooper (Yam). The Open Am-Ex topped off the day. Scott Haislip is usually seen in the desen on a trailbike but was on a 400 CZ and really put it through its paces. He barely managed to slide under Troy Hollis (Suz) in time to take the first moto. Both were hard pressed by Layman Gattis (CZ) in all the motos. Haislip wrapped up the second mota while Hollis took the third. Unoticed by some, but back in the pack Geo. Oack) Thibault was making an interesting effort to change his style. The Barstow M.C. has been holding their Lake Delores race on the first Sunday of each man th but will go to the second Sunday for the month of October. The l_ocal riders will be helping to put on a benefit race for Rescue 3 and the Barstow Fire Dept. on the first Sunday.
