'" '" f I "" .... '" '"ri < - '" li ell " ell ~ W _ Z w -' U > U .' , the scenery and viewing at Carlsbad lAME) is right fine. A.M.E. Motocross-----by Tom Corley CARLSBAD, CAL., Sept. 17, 1972 Allen Ortez, racing as a 250 Int., cleaned up in today's AME Sportsman event on the Carlsbad European track. Ortez led both the Intermediates and Senior racers-to grab the huge first place AM£. trophy. Ortez, while in the lead, looked like he Was a factory-sponsored racer on a Maico from Germany, having trouble from nothing but the tough terrain of this grueling mo tocross track. Ortez kept outriding the pack and outdistanced them so easily that a typical spectator may have though t that it Was German ace Adolf Wei!. John A t wood, who was just racing a Hemi-Hodaka not too long ago, took second behind Ortez, and is proving to be the newest thing in AM£. 250 Int. racing. Third place finisher, Ron Schwab, just got moved up into the Intermediate ranks today. Ron's out here every week, winning again and, again, but until now was just like many of the other Juniors who could compete with most of the Seniors if they had the chance. Ron showed them in the first two motos ahead of most everyone, and could have done well in the third if it we~n't for a run in with the crossbar. Behind Schwab came Don Starnn (Bul), Rich Kastner (Bul), and Albert Ortez on another fine running Maico. Senior Pete Maly swept the class but fell shaft of zonking Qrtez, the Inteonediate threat. It isn't often anyone can make it difficult for Maly. Bill Shennard (CZ), Mark Hutchins (CZ), and Bruce Behar on a Montesa took second, third, and fourth, respectively. Be at Saddleback Sunday for the. AM£. program to see some real action as racers move up into the: more competitive classes. .~ ACE MX------~by John Grout VALENCIA CAL., Sept. 12, 1972 ACE motoc~oss racing for all divisions switched over to the high·speed International course for today's staccato-f"rre program at Indi~ Dunes Park. I With 436 riders - 78 ali whom were scoot-far-wampum ProfesSionals - the daylong donnybrook reached culmination at 3:45 p.m. The ambulance crew enjoyed a fan tastic vacation, with pay. Bill "the Maico Mauler" Payne tackled a total of 53. of the better Pro racers in the nation, as he went for overall wins in both the 250cc and Open classes. During the first 20·minute mota for the heavy goods, Payne was able to sail to a rather rapid victory over te.ammate Hart, O'Neal at;Id Benson. As the fin"" mota for Open Pros roared from dle lin.e, Payne, who is sponsored by ;Mike's RAcing Center in Northride, was not among the front-running fifteen. Holcomb held the lead followed by Wecker, Hart and O'N~al. 11 -was not until the very last laps, that :payne was able to work his way forward, taking fifth and an overall win at.tll" llAcc.\<"g; •• • In 250cc Pro warfare, Payne was also to capture the first 20-minute heat while defeating, among others, Glen Lund (Hus) and Craig Brewster (Bul). As the bikes slid round the tG,P of the hill for the fmal mota, an immediate dice was on for the front-running postion among Payne, Greg Robertson (CZ) and Jon Miller (Mai). Six or seven times during the initial laps, the lead changed hands between Robertson and Payne on the third lap. Finally, Robertson gained the fron t spot, holding it to the final wire. Payne finished second, however, and that· assured him of his second overall win of the day. Young Danny LaPorte, the uTorrance Tornado" on a Penton, whipped a talen ted and overflowing field of 125cc Pros in straight sets to collect an overall win in tha:t particular division. Ken Janson, a 1-2-1 finisher on a CZ, scored an impressive triumph over a swift 250cc Senior group. Runners-up included Jim Burnett (Bul), Matt Bilton (Mai), Randy Stubbs (Bul) and Jimmy Gappa (Bul). Mike Mossman (DKW) was the 125cc Senior winner; while CZ-mounted Chris Crowell collected the overall amongst Open Seniors. . In l00cc Junior activity, it was Dave Montgomery (Hod), Mike Brown (Man) and Ralph Kerr (Hod). Wins in the division were tallied by John Jugenhemer (Yam), Brown and Montgomery . Jedd Strange, who rides for Dick NlJen's Yamaha in Newhall, and Bultaco flil:;er . Russ McAfee collected day's qveralls against the two divisions of 125cc Juniors. While Bob Aldersman (Mai) and Rani Bates (CZ) grabbed wins in the two groupings of 250cc Juniors. Bob Cullinan (CZ) swept to another victory over the Open Juniors. Tom Kelsey (CZ) and Dan Pultz (Bul) were the .probable followers. ACE motocross action returns to the Shadow Glen course at Indian Dunes this Sunday. First race at 9: 15 a.m. AMC Saddleback..- - - - - by Kent Nicholls IRVINE, CAL., Sept. 16,1972 - Today marked the beginning of the $4 ,000 Smuggler Motocross Series. When this series is qver in December, the rider with the most points will get a brand new Smuggler trailer (What else'?) Other prizes include a 125 Yamaha, Cragar Mags, and trip to Hawaii. The races almost didn't begin as Mom Nature came up with something she hasn't used on the AMC before-fog. It was so thick that practice had to be delayed until after 10 a.m. Due to thiS delay the normal five-lap races had to be ~t down to three in the last set of motos to end the [acing day before the sun ended it's day. Something new Was added to the Plogram: an Old Timers class and an Intermediate class in the 125,250 and Open classes. The first mota of the Old Timers' class saw Tom Bell, Sr. grab the lead right off the start. The next time around, he was nowhere to be seen, having unloaded the back side of the track. Maico rider, Rick Watson, took over the lead and held it for the rest of the moto. In mota two J it was. Lous ~\lQ"'1I wh<,} ')f tN.V' p. iGF iW' with Bell (Am- x) in close secana. The Young DKW rider digging the.downstate sand. at AME Carlsbad. in the last lap, Bell got by Haehnlen (Suz) to win the mota. Mota three was almost an instant reply of the second one with a small change in plot. Bell dido't get around Haehnlen and had to settle for a second for the day. Haehnlen was the victor and Watson (Remember him?) got a third. Cliff.hanger of the day: _the second division of the 100 Beginner class saw a close battle between Hodaka pilot Gary Pringle and' Cris Provost (Ric) each grabbing the lead several times. When the flag fell, it Was Provost who won the first mota and Pringell second. The second mota saw the same close action, this time with Pringel winning and Pro""st was in the second spot. Each now had a first and a second, which made them tied in points, and the only way one or the other could win the class Was to win the last mota. After the rest of the second set of motos wound down and most of the third went by (AMC goes in reverse order.). it was again time for the cliffhanger class. As the riders sat on the line waiting for the gate to fall and, as the tension mounted, bad things were going on inside the engine of Provost's Rickman and he was last getting off the line. This stroke of bad luck gave Pringell the win, and Provost got a second. In conjunction with the Smuggler Series, the Mini-eycle riders have their own event called the Yamaha Mini-eycles Series and the first prize is (You guessed it!) a Yamaha Mini-Enduro. Today, the Hover eleven" and the "Uoder eleven" were combined producing a hard fought three mota battle between our eleven winner, Brad Dutoit (Han) and "under" winner, Jeff Ward (Han, too.) The first mota saw Dutoit win by a good margin and Ward got a second. When it was time for the little racers to do it again, the lead was again grabbed by Dutoit, but Ward was really close behind. Just a few feet before the checkered, Ward got his front wheel in front of Dutoit and thereby won thesecond mota. The third Was nearly the same the first, only Ward was in the lead and Dutoit was a close second. Saddleback now !!as-
