By Alice Rhea LUCERNE VALLEY, CAL., Sept. 10, 1972 - "Outta Sight!" shouted the Amateur as he fish tailed through the sandwash on the third 30 mile loop of Stump Jumpers' Hare Scrambles. He'd made it. A.C. Bakken (Hus)' held a commanding lead over the field of approximately 800 starters in Stump Jumpers Hare Scrambles today. Bakken led through the first loop but stuffed it coming into the pits and Tom Brooks (DKW) got by. . Tom had a bad start and was runnmg labout 40th at the. bomb, but was riding like a madman catching up. A.C. grabbed the lead again and was in fron t at the bomb on the second loop but, by the third loop, Tom was out front again Div. II lightweight class, elated at having finally got in ahead of Glen Bolenbaugh who was third in his class. Stump Jumpers had anticipated theusual hot Septe-mber weather and laid out a course that was fast and not too difficult. However, the weather remained cool and "the riders really had an easy time of it. Many of them were grinning coming through the checks. One rider with 'Schmid', which I suppose is his name, written on his helmet will probably had to use steel wool to get the dirt off his teeth. N one of the Trailbikes made the full three loops. Tom Brooks passed the first 100cc Novice righ t at the finish' line as he was completing his win. Mark Steel was first overall Novice, bringing in his 250 Bul ahead of the Heavyweights and all the other Novice-ridden machinery, for that matter. Dean Modesett gave DKW another Ltwt. II victory, this time in the Novice class. and stayed there righ t through the finish line. Tom, Sr. chewed his f'mgemails up to his elbows as he saw the younger Tom f'Jghting a flat front tire. But flat or no, Tom was WFO all the way, with A.C. giving him a good workout. Tom's 125 DKW was first across the line with A.C. in second overall for first Open Expert honors. ' Bill Friant (Puc) was among the front runners through the sandwash the first time, dicing beavily with Jack Knebel (CZ). Friant hit a rock and ricocheted off the canyon walls causing panic among the spectators, but the last we saw of him he had it under con trol and was headed in the right direction again. He later dropped out with a blown gearbox. Jim Fishback (CZ) sweated his way From Ihe people _ho bring you flYG&• • •'• • to third overall and first 250 Expert. Tom Poteet (Ric) had a minute lead over the rest of the 250 Experts, but dropped out with a flat. Art Knapp (Hus) maintained a consisten t pace to finish fourth overall and second Open Expert, as Amateur 1554, Curt Gibson (Hus) and Tom Muto (Hus) dropped back with various problems. Jack Knebel (CZ) made a very nice comeback today finishing fifth overall and third Open Expert. Asked how the shoulder felt Jack replied, "Just fine."No, it isn't. It hurts like hell." We are all glad to see Jack come back so welL. Rich Mark rode his 450 Husky to Victory as first Amateur. Mitch Mayes (Baj) led the Trail Experts for a while, but Larry Roseler (Baj) managed to get by and took first honors in that class, followed by Cordis Brooks (Hod).
