Spillway Park MX _ by Mike Anderson Photos bv Chuck Anderson SANTA MARl.... , CAL., Sept. 3, 1972 The promise of contingency prizes and super trophies produced over 200 competitive riders for the Dan Irby Benefit Moto-Cross held Sunday at Spillway Park. The Santa Barbara Starters were pleased with the turnout, and the turnout was pleased with the way the Starters put on a race. The only female Starter, Cherry Stockton (Bul) started things off by completely zapping the Powder Puffers the first moto only to break down in the second moto leaving an open field for Sue Bowen (Suz) to take the win. Joe Nunez (Yam) of the Nipomo Racing Team snuffed the 100 Jrs. winning all three motos after hard fough t battles with Wayne Stewart (Suz), Jim Flowers (Suz) and Johnny Rogers (Kaw). Steve Bargiachi (Hus) won all three moto's in the 125 Jr. Div. "A" as did Mike Johnston (Bu1) in the 125Jrs. Div. "B". Bill Grossi, by virtue of a 1·1·3 took the top honors in the 125 Experts.Jack Keese (Bul) led all three motos until falling in the first two but staying up to win the final. Mike Hampton (Mai) and Jim Suderland (Yam) went at their usual battle in the 250 Jr. class with Suderland winning all three motos after tigh t battles. The 250 Experts had a loaded field of talent including Bill Grossi (Hus), " i' 0.. N '" '" ",' ~ Vl ~ W Z W ..J U > U .. ~ 7'. .... , .,.,.. . ...-- ..,. Bobby Schwartz (Bul) took the lead in the first moto for three laps before falling. Billy won the first moto with jerry Johnson 2nd and John Rossini 3rd. The second moto Johnson won over Grossi and Stanley Clay (Mai), Intermediate rider, beat out Grossini for 3rd. Grossi won the last moto followed by Grossini and again Stanley Clay. Needless to say, ~ Clay won the Intermediate trophy and Grossi the Expert gold. Joe Cushaway (CZ) jumped into the lead in the first moto of the 500 Expert only to crash leaving Bob Grossi all alone, way out in front. Bob Rogers (CZ) held on for second abead of Dennis Law (Mai). The second moto Intermediate Scott Frisby (CZ) took the lead with Bob Rogers second and Grossi third. Practically the rest of the entire Expert field fell in a huge first lap tangle behind these three. Grossi got by Rogers after Rogers got by Frisby. Rogers had to drop out with mechanical problems and Frisby got passed by Milan Garret (Hus) and Dennis Law (Mai). Grossi also won the last moto with Law second and LeRoy Cushaway (stepping in for an injured Joe) third. The fmal tally Grossi, Law and Scott Frisby 1st Intermediate. ....> - -;r .~ r • I Mike Hampton took a second in the first moto of the 250 Junior race but crashed and injured his leg while leading the second at Spillway, Bay Mare Motocross ..... _ by Mark Milford SOMIS, CAL., Sept. 3, 1972 As a hefty crowd of riders showed up for Bay Mare's Junior/Intermediate Day, today, they quickly discovered that the advertised "course change" did not exist! Unless, that is, you were: an Intermediate, in which you were run up the already existing Senior Hill. Strange, wonder what they meant in the ads? The racing, therefore, took place on the tried-and-true, wired-by-all maxc v, whoope-dee-doos they call Bay Mare Raceway. The few Intermediates that showed up, however, put on such a show of riding precision that the rough track was quickly forgotten. The 125 Int. race, for example, turned into a wheel-to-wheel clash between Joe Root, (DKW) and Mike Mossman, similarly mounted. These two would circle the course just a few feet apart, each shifting when the other did, and each with their throttles glued full on. Although Joe won the first go by at le....t several wheel lengths, the second moto was even closer until Mike became anti-social and crashed, continuing alone for second place. The last round was a copy of the first two for several laps, whereupon Joe, riding a thinking man's race, dropped back for a guaranteed first overall. Ken Janson (CZ), long a super-quick 250 Jr. at Bay Mare, moved up to the Intermediates to smoke them, too, as did fellow CZ rider Louis Lima in the Open Intermediate class. Jim Byrd (Yam) topped a talented second division of 250 Juniors, which included second and third place Mike Puckless (CZ) and Randy Black (Yam). Roger Keleslager (CZ) beat the others in his, the first division of 250s. Larry Burgess, on a '72 125 DKW, and Don Hicks, 380 CZ-mounted, won their Junior classes again today. What is interesting to note: is that, while neither were strangers to the winners circle before, both did not begin their virtually unstoppable winning streaks un til they acquired these new machines. In all, though the course was choppy, it still has the classic, European-style layout that makes Bay Mare so popular. In which case, race fans should be delighted. Bay Mare will soon resume weekly MX, instead of the once-every-three-weeks thing that often keeps local racers sitting at home, frustrated. Argyll Park Dave Harmon on his way to second in the 125 Novice class at Argyll Park. _ by Reese Ultz DIXON, CAL., Aug. 20, 1972 -Today was Novice Day, again" at Argyll Park, as the Sacramen to Racing Association staged another one of its even ts to, promote more Novice riders to Amateur standing. One of the day's highlights was the mini-bike races which were more or less dominated by Mark Shumate and Darmy Chandler in the Junior and Senior events, respectively. Michael Haynes aced out a field of 32 riders for top honors in the 100 Novice class, while Bill Buker, Frank Fernandez, and Craig Pierce wrapped up the three sep-arate divisions of 125 Novice. , With three divisions of 250 Novice, the laurels went to Duane Doran, Karl Clark and Randy Richardson. All three of these riders are proving themselves to be good material for Amateur standing ~~ • C; 'P~ .~e IIlflv, ~ s!'.ortl..r- Two other up-and-coming riders are Clifford Ball and Rusty Mantooth who captured the two divisions of Open Novice. Runners-up were Cloyse Holland,Jr. and Mike Klein. Adding to the excitem.ent, Gene "s ully" SulHvan, the stunt man, performed for the spectators by riding his 650 Triumph over a ramp and through a burning barricade. AU of this was in preparation for his September 3rd premiere for the Hydracycle, a fete wherein he will leave a ramp at 80 mph and land his water-ski equipped Triumph 180 feet distant on the surface of the lake at Argyll Park. Just before touchdown, Sully will engage two jet cylinders which will allow him to 'water ski' the Hydracycle around the lake. The most surprising part of this premiere is that Sully truly believes he can do it successfully Sh.ades of Billy arkfeath_er). "": .... ,~ '"'~ ~ -~:~~<~ .... "" -
