CRC Rawhide - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -.......by "The Shadow" £LSI ORE, CAL., Aug. 27, 1972 Almost 250 riders gathered Sunday to challenge the tough, hut well-manicured Rawhide Park course, and do battle for a pot of gold offered at the end of the rainbow. In this case, the pot of gold referred to is the 40 percen t trophies offered by the California Racing Club. Rawhide, located near Elsinore on State Hwy. 74, proved to be quite a test of skill, as riders slugged it out on a day which featured little sun, high humidity and warm temperatures, but nothing more than a threat of rain - along with distant thunder and lightning. It was the type of day which really left you dragging and drained by the time the massive program of 12 races (three motos, 10 laps for each rider) came to an end shortly after 5 p.m. Race of the day honors wen t to the 125 Novice, under 16 class, where Danny Knott (CZ) and Billy Morrison (Bul). both 14 and Palmdale residents, put on quite a show, which was capped by a wheel-to-wheel finish in the final moto that left Knott in first place and Morrison in second. 1n the first race, Knott took a first and Morrison a second. The exact opposite was true in the second mOlO where ~lorrison was first and Knott second. Finally in the third moto, Knott took first by mere inches and Morrison was second, gi\;ng Knott 1100 points to Morrison's 1000. Both boys trophied in the class of four competitors, Palmdale's fair-haired (long-haired might be more the wordj Jeff Hunt (Hod) turned in a perfect day in the 100 ovice, under 16 class. Hunt won all three motDs with three competitors in his class, posting a perfect 1200 points. Hunt's best race came on the final moto as he did battle with Dan Moon (Hod), who was the winner in the 100 Novice class. It was quite a race, with the twosome finishing neck-and-neck at the checkered flag. I ron Man of the day honors wen t to Jack Eit~en, who competed in the 250 Beginners, Division One class, and the Open Beginners, Division One class. If that weren't quite enough, Eitzen won both even ts. The Veterans class was again fat, for the third week in a row. Art Meyer (Yam) took the Vets 125-250 class, with Harry Gardner (Oss) second, and R.O. Waldron (Kaw) third. John Miley (CZ) won the vets 250-Open class, with Jim Harnisch (Mai), "Mary The Doll's Husband", second, and Chuck Berry (Bul), third. CRC President Jerry ~IcNeal, pleased with the fantastic turnout of Vets often called ."Old Timers" by those less informed than the Shadow - issued an invitation to everyone 35 and older to turn out for CRC races and join the crowd. Additional winners Sunday were: David Oller (Hon), Minibikes; Christine Hopkins (Yam), Powder Puff; Bill Glore. 100 Beginners, under 16; and Jeffrey Crump (Sac), 100 Beginners. Richard Seefried (Yam), 125 Beginners, under 16; hawn Huffman CRC Rawhide II - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - by "The Shadow" ELSmORE, CAL., Sept. 3, 1972 Sunday at Rawhide Park., near Elsinore. the mud and beer were plentiful, and thankfully the blood was conspicious by its absence, as the California Racing Club hosted a full card of motocross racing. In case you were lost by the lead paragraph, you might think back to the song Johnny Cash made famous, "A Boy Named Sue", because as the day wore on, and a heavy rain made itself known all this writer could think of was the phrase, "The mud, hlood and beer". Anyway, with almost 150 riders on hand Sunday - a pretty fair turnout considering many were gone for the Labor Day holiday - festivities got underway with sunshine. In fact it was downrigh t hot and miserable, is the humidity seemed to be trying to mll-tch the temperature. Other than one heavy shower during the early going, the first two motos were untouched by rainfall. As the third mOlD got underway. however, things began to change rapidly. By the midway poin t in tbe last go. rain was pouring down, but still the racers continued to pilot their machines through the slimy mess. Strangely as it may seem, there were practically no injuries, although' the mud did produce some spectacular spills. Raw hide Park manager George Johnson put work you wouldn't believe into the track, offering the CRC an almost completely new course. It was beautiful. to say the least. However, those piloting the big bikes didn't seem to enjoy the new layout as much as those riding smaller machines. Top rides of the day went to Kenneth F. Tekut (Yam) and Billy Morrison (Bul). Both were champions in their classes. Tek.ut, of Edwards, rolled to one first and two second place finishes, as he gathered 1000 points to win the 125 Beginners class. Seventeen riders were in the class. Morrison, of PalmdaLe, took the 125 Novice, under 16 class with two firsts and a second good for 1100 points. Four were in the class. Bobby Knott (Yam). of Palmdale, turned in another super ride, placing second against 13 riders in the 100 Beginners, under 16 class. Knott took two straight third place rides, then came on to take a first in the pouring rain during his final moto, posting 50 . points. Next stop for the CRC is here in the Antelope Valley, as the club plays host to a desert race next Sunday, seven miles north of Adelanto on Hwy. 395. On Sunday, Sept. 17, the CRC tTavels to Arroyo Cycle Park, near San Bernardino, wh:ile on Sunday, Sept. 24, the club 'will again be at Rawhide Park, near Elsinore. '" " i6' Q. .... (DKW), 125 Novice;. and Tony' DePhillips (BuI), 125 Beginners. ~like Huhn (AJS), 250 Beginners, under 16; Pete Smith (Bul). 250 Novice, under 16; Fulton Tidwell (CZ), 250 Beginners, Division 2; Ted Romero (Kaw) , 175 Beginners; Roy'Holsheimer (CZ), 250 Novice, Division 1; and John Dorius (Yam). 250 Novice, Division 2. Merlin Harris (Hus), Open Novice. Two second places worth men tioDing went to Antelope Valley riders. Wi th 17 riders in his class, 12-year-old Bobby Knott, of Palmdale, riding his Ray Bevans Yamaha 90, again proved himself tough, taking two straigh t second places and a third to gain 825 points in the 100 Beginners, under 16 class. Knott's best race turned out to be the second moto, where he tried a new spot on the starting line - and got off to a perfect dead-last start. By the end of the first lap he had moved to sixth, and the second Lap found him in second place, a position he held the remainder of the race. Edwards Air Force Baser Kenneth F. Tekut, riding a Yamaha, took a second place overall in the 125 Beginners race. Starting slowly to throw the pack of 15 riders off balance, Tekut posted a sixth place in h is first moto, then two straight second place finishes to gain 695 points. i!\[M[M~W~OO~i!\OOV~~[b~ SATURDAY SEPTEMBER 16 9am to 9pm ~ featuring - LIGHTWEIGHT NYLON RACING JERSEYS H.E AT LAST 'POW_HEAD' Number and name while you wait SHIRTS BY JADE BULTACO $3.99 BAY AREA *1352 Centinela.
