395 Go Fasts f l>- .... en N en c. en " ~ w Z W ..J U > U Dan Rees (352) held off Mike Delaney to win the Open Novice Half-Mile after winning the TT over Terry Wryembek. 395 TT and Half-Mile by K. C. Brintnall ADELANTO, CALIF., Sept. 9, 1972 Surprisingly few riders showed up to give it a go at 395 Cycle Park in Adelanto this evening, but what they lacked in quantity they made up for in enthusiasm and great competitive riding. 10 the evening's first Main, Mark Upton (Kaw) took an early lead in the 100 Novice IT with the Kawasakis of Don Tallman, Steve Sisco, and Gary Evans in hot pursuit. The riders must have liked the way they finished that race because in the 100 Novice Half-mile -the first seven riders finished in exactly the same order they did in the IT Main. Curiouser and Curiouser. .. Not satisfied with two wins, Upton decided to try for three, going into the 125 Novice IT, one of the hottest battles of the evening. Robert Hannah (Yam) grabbed the lead off the line and . held on for two laps while Upton and Leldon Slate (Yam) followed close behind, waiting for their chance to move ou t in front. When the opportuniry 'carne, both Slate and Upton zapped him, and Hannah was left to vie with Brian Coakley (Yam) for third while Upton picked up his third • win of the eveninR. Pro TT at South Bay _ JeH Cesmat gets it over showing the expert style that gave him a win in the Half-Mile and a third in the TT. 250 Novice Bruce Foley (Bul) had it all together as he picked up a win in both IT and Hall-mile Mains in his class. The consistent riding sryle of Dan Rees (Suz) garnered first in the Open Novice IT and Hall-mile Mains. In the Expert Main events, Mike Laney (Hod) was having a rough nigh t as he opened up a lead in both the IT and Half-ntile races only to be shut down after a couple of laps. Tim McCool (Yam) was the eventual winner of the hard-fought battle in the IT, while Jeff Cesmat (Yam) came from behind to take over a good strong lead in the Half·mile. It looks as though some of Adelanto's hot shoes could use a little fresh competition from some of the riders who frequen t other tracks_ As one of the riders picked up his trophy, his little sister remarked dejectedly, "Oh, did you get another trophy?" Don England, who runs 395 Cycle Park, has decided that it's time to set a world record for motorcycles on a dirt track, and has plans to run a 24 hour IT race. He hopes to run the event some time in late October or over Thanl>sgiving weekend and would like to see about fifry riders trying for the record. If you're the type who would rather race than .sleep, give it some thought_.. Sportsman TT at Corona by Tom Blattler SOUTH BAY SPEEDWAY, CAL., Sept. 10, 197Z - Mike Haney made it two in a row at South Bay as he led the Am/Ex Main from wire to wire last Sunday in the J.C. Agajanian AMA Class C Steeplechase. Henry grabbed the lead from second place Eddie Wirth in the first turn of the first lap and left the rest of the field in his dust. Haney's victory was his second in a month at South Bay. He also captured the first IT put on by Agajanian. Wirth (Yam) placed second behind Haney's Triumph. Junior rider Larry Gino took the number three position, after falling on the final lap in the Main last mon th while running fourth. Another junior rider, Alex Annstrong, finished fourth as he did at Sou th Bay last time, also collecting fourth. Triumph-mounted Greg Hodges held on to the fifth position followed by Ward Ring, Brian LaPlante, and Ivan Shigemasa. Haney captured the first spot in the Am/Ex heat, with Wirth taking tbe Semi followed by Annstrong and LaPlante. Gino w~ the victor in the two-lap Trophy Dash as he fough t off Wirth and Haney to the checkered flag. The most exciting race of th.e evening was the Novice feature wi th Larry Collie, Dan White, and Dennis Briggs battling throughou t the eigh t-Iap Main. Collie grabbed the lead from the start but could not pull away from White and Briggs. White took the lead from Larry on the second lap but, by the third go around, Collie was back in front. Collie, White, and Briggs were so close that you could throw a blanket over them, but neither White nor Briggs could take the lead away from Collie. On the final lap, White and Briggs came over the jump very tigh tly and Briggs took a spill but jumped up and ran off the track. Chris Smith rode his Kawasaki to third with Mike Koplin collecting fourth. Requi( Holt placed futh followed by Bob Greenstreet and Bill Cain. . Collie also collected a heat win and the Dash with Briggs taking the Semi. J. C. Agajanian returns to South Bay Spl'edway on October 8th with a Pro Half-mile .. _ by Elaine Jones CORONA, CAL., Sept. 6, 1972 - The Flag flew at half mast at Corona as both riders and spectators shared in a moment of silent tribute to the slain Olympic athletes from Israel. It was a ~oving experience. The most exciting race of the evening was the 250 AM/EX. Doug Mason, a star at Perris, came to Corona for the second time recovering from a broken collarbone, and flat ran away from the field running two-tenths of a second off the track record set by Jeff Sexton. Dennis Briggs was second; Jim Wrigh t picked up third. The Big Bike Moto saw places separated by two points_ Mike Boyle, on an older BSA, was left on the line and' had to play catcb-up. He caught up enough to place and thell-came back in his nex.t two goes to take the overall by only two points with Jim Johnson pretry much up his exhaust pipe all the way. Bob Herrick was third. The second close score was in the 100 N ovic~ II. Bill Materson took first but Frank Knapp literally squeezed by third place Mike Kohl. Robbie Rice WHITT•• HONDA FOR NOT EVERYONE CAN HAVE A BOYD & STELLINGS COMPETITION MOTORCYCLE CHASSIS took Division I. J ohn Newqu~t earned his graduation papers as he won the 250 Novice II three for three. Gary Juola picked up the second with William Arbaugh in third. Wayne Whisenan t reclaimed his throne in the 100 AM/EX class but Randy Monore didn't make it easy. In fact, Randy got across the line first in heat one. It was short-lived as Wayne came back to take the overall. Doug Westly rounded out the field. Sal Peluso made the long trip from San Diego worth his while as he won the 125 AM/EX. Bobby Bu tt finally got it together to get around Sal but it was the last moto and too late to do any good. Vern Maxwell was third. Steve Bales, on his first ride as an AM/EX took top rated Jim Wright in the 175-200 AM/EX. Richard Durkee was third. Gary White won the 175-200 Novice over Tom Mitchell and Harry Jensen. Some of the riders are getting lax about silencers. Remember, no silencer, no trophy. This includes mini-bikes and cycles. ..
