j THE PRO'S AT ASCOT Photos by Dan Mahony GARDENA, CAL., Sept. 8, 1972 -It's going to be back to slam bang racing every Friday nigh t. Lloyd Houchins got hls last week and came from the back row to win the Main. It was the rast time this year that the program will be combined with Experts and junior, racing at the same time. It was one of the better big bike fmals but it was a setback for Ron Moore, who had cleaned everybody up to the final race. Then his machine went on one cylinder on the first lap of the final. The rest of the way it was determined Houchins against a couple of hot running Juniors. Larry Gino, who has had trouble fmding the winner's circle of late, jumped into the lead only to give way on lap six to Houchins who, Ilke Moore, can have troubles th at run in long streaks. Houchins moved in to first but not by far as junior Denny Kanegae, gassed it and passed first DeWayne Keeter and then Gino, taking over second on lap eigh L By lap ten Denny was righ t with Houchins and trying to pass for the lead. This time, everything went right for Houchins and he held on. On the final lap, Keeter decided to get back in the act and passed Kanegae coming out of the last turn to take second place. Mike Renslow balled out in Novice practice and did not ride in the 250 class. But the latest flash, Rick Milner was back for his third or fourth try. Rick first came from the back row to clean house on Randy Balley in the heat race while John Ge:mal and Rick Hocking were doing the same in their five-Iappers. Motocrosser Bob Hosford finally won an oval race, the Semi, aboard a Suzuki. Tben he dropped out early in th e final with continuing engine troubles. Milner couldn't get close to Gennai or Hocking in the fmal but pulled a third. The win went to Gennal with Hocking in second. a . c Lloyd Houchins finally kept it all together at Ascot holding off hard-charging Junior Kanegae and hard-luck Ron Moore (37RI. DeWayne Keeter got up for second. TROJAN TT and FT _ by Art Logay SOUTH GATE, CAL., Sept. 7, 1972 Chuck Hatcher (Bul) climaxed a night of surprises by scoring double wins in the 250 TT and F.T. Malns Thursday at Trojan. Hatcher's extraordinary ahility to find a racing groove when circling the outside of the oval, and using his speedway experience, enabled the 34.year-old rider to chalk up his first major victories at the South Gate oval. His first win, in the 250 TT, came at the expense of Jamey Blunt (Oss), who led the first six laps of the eigh t-Iap Main before dropping out of contention with a stuck throttle. Blunt, having his problems with a stuck throttle, gave way to Hatcber on the seventh lap. Hatcher took the white flag first while Blunt failed to complete the final lap. At the start of the TT Main; Braln Garcia, "Super Mx", and Les Bomar (Tri), making his Itrst start after a brief absence, tangled and spilled on the first lap causing a restart. As the 12-rider field maneuvered for positions on the first lap of the restart, Jim Miller (Oss) , and Ken Provencio (Yam), locked wheels sending both riders down while Coberly just missed the pair with some fancy handling of his bike. On the thlrd and final start, Blunt out-jumped the field as Dan Corbett (Bul), stalled on the start and never got a chance to compete. The 250 F.T. Main saw Corbett, hit the wall in the front stretch while attempting to regaln the lead on the third lap. Narrowly missed by the remaining lO-rider field, Corbett was not injured, but headed for the pit area as the "hard luck" rider of the evening. Hatcher, fourth on the first lap, agaln used the high groove to mue his passes and took the lead from Corbett to hold off the field to the checkered. The finish was a near carbon copy of the TT finish as Coberly held on for' second ahead of Wiles, Garcia, Newquist, White, Dan McWhorter (Oss), Provencio, and Miller. One of the big reasons these riders are competing so furious is "Miss Boge", Cindy Clemens, a lovely, blue-eyed blonde, representing Dimex Mota Imports who makes weekly contingency cash awards to Maln event winners in behalf of Boge shocks. by Elaine Jones was again Jeff Cesmat who had to run Coleman. second to John Allison and his powerful The race looked like it was going to Yamaha Chuck Fruchey was third in be between Allison and Smith with this one, Chris taking the win in Heat one. Heat Wayne Whisenant was dethroned in two saw Allison settle down and go to the 100 Amateur-Expert Short Track work and Chris started having problems, and by two riders, Vince Mead and Troy slipping down to fourth behind Tim Fisher. Vince and Troy, who are McCool who didn't make the first heat antagonists from way back, pulled no and jeff Cesmat. Chris, whatever problems we had punches. In the end it was Vince Mead were major enough to fmish him for the on top, Troy second and Wayne night. At this point the scores for Whisenan t third. Charles Soderstrom gave Jim Wright second and third were pretty much up another lesson in the 175 -200 Short for grabs and it was Jeff who fmished it off for second overall. Chris, even Track, butJim is learning fast and in the fmal mota gave as good as he got and though he finished only two races, had enough for third, In the Short Track, it beat Charles but it was too late to get anything but a second. Hal Cheetwood was third. Jim made up for it in the 250 Amateur Short Track where he beat out Bob Graves and Larry Furu. Carroll Heiland has the distinction of being the only one to have John Allison chasing him instead of vice-a-versa as he won the 250 Expert Short Track. Gary Anderson rounded out the field. Don Waffle, Doug Penault and John Newquist handily won their 250 Novice Short Track goes, Kip Johnston took his migh ty 90cc Yamaha to the front in the 100 Novice I Short Track and came within one win of an Amateur rating as he beat Suzuki mounted Steve Lyons and Kirk Doyle. Karen Lesak gives "Buckwheat" Swett his Boge contingency check but Cindy Clemens is supposed to be Miss 80ge. What's happening? Will the real "MJss Sage" please stand up? Corona Short Track and Half Mile ---------------..;...-;.;...-_~----...;.,.--------------CORONA, CAL., Aug. 30, 1972 - Rick Milner doesn't look like he would even know what a motorcycle is, let alone race one but when he gets on a Half Mile track ahoard his 250 Kawasaki, you better pay attention because you're going to see some kind of show. In the Half Mile Expert go Rick was pitted against Tim McCool and Jeff Coleman. It was no contest. John Allison, the "Poway Flash" was on hand and picked up gold in both the Amateur-Expert Half Mile and the Short Track. John's opposition in the Half Mile event was a star-studded one with Jeff Cesmat, Chris Smith, Tim McCool, Chuck Fruchey, Rick Marquis and Jeff MONARCH PLASTIC FENDERS Ask your dealer for NATIONAL DIGS IN ,.. with Motorcycle Repair Training heavy with .solid basics ...
