AMC Saddleback _ , by Kent Nicholls IRVINE, CAL., Sept. 2, 19'12 - The-AMC had not one, but two (Count 'em-two!) races this weekend. Their regular Saturday get-to-gether and a Labor Day Freebee to make up for the race that got rained out a few weeks back. The regular nice on Saturday had a fairly light turnout, but the Freebee more than made up for it with over 400 riders in fifteen differen traces. Even with the smaller number of riders, the racing on Sat. was good. One such good race was the 250 Jr class in which J on Miller and his CZ dueled with Richard Kastner (Bul) for all three matos, each having the lead severar times during each race. When the last race ended, it was Miller in the lead position and Kastner was holding down a close second. The 125 'Novices and Juniors were combined Sat.,·putting just-became-fast-guy Eddie Coulter in with Juniors Greg Blackwell and Co. After three poor starts, Coulter worked his way up three times to not only win the Novice class, but to also beat the Jrs. This bit of fine riding earned him a promotion. The victar in the 125 Jr. class was none other' than Greg BlackwelL . While on the subject of Blackwells, Greg and Mark's father, Jack, has taken up motorcycle racing and isn't doing too badly, either. In fact, he got himself a third in the 500 Novice class ·on Saturday. Say "free" and all of a sudden people's eyes light up with tiny dollar signs as they dream of saving money. Well, on Monday there was a lot of people with Lit eyes, since anyone and every one could ride for free on freebee day, not just the people who got ralned out a while back. With over 400 riders, you know that the racing just has to be good to watch, and it was. The race of the day. had to be the 125 NovicelJr Combined class (No, I'm not a 125 freak.) in which John Adams on a Bultaco wan all three races, even though he is a Novice. Adams' victory was not easily won. In the first mota, he and just Juniorized Eddie Coulter went at it for all five laps. Coulter could never get around Adams, but he put on a good show trying. In the second mota, Coulter got a poor start and was nowhere near Adams, but Adams had a new problem in the shape of Bul pilot Fred N ackas who pushed Adams for several laps, but never getting around him. The third mota was nearly an instant replay of the first motos with only a slight change in plot. The change consisted of Jr. Rob Arr (DKW) grabbing the lead at the start and holding on to it until the fourth lap when Adams sneaked around him to grab the win.. Coulter won the Jr. division and Arr got third in th at same class. Saddleback has one very dangerous .spot and that is where people cross the track from the pits, it is a blind place and someone is going to get hurt there soon. It may be a spectator who runs across the track at the wrong time or ir could be the rider who is unfortunate enough to hit the spectator. Closing off th.at area of building an overpass sure would be better than someone getting hurt-are you listening Mr. Wilson? More Muntz Motocross _ AME - CZ Series Muntz Motocross < by Mark Milford MOORPARK, CAL., Sept. 3, 1972 Afte,r last wee1.;s Jaycees race, Western States Motocross returned to Muntz again ,with a Labor Day weekend - doubleheader two full days of All-Junior action. The first day, Sunday, dawned on what has become the expected at Muntz: a superbly prepared track and a very light rider turnout. Today's event, however, differed from those of weeks past by the addition of a radical course change. Increasing the length of the track by about 40%, the newly added section winds up into the dust-and-rock covered hills, only to come down through what is, at best, a single-file ravine. Many riders doubted whether this was actually an uimprovement". The racing 'action, though, revealed once again one of the major faults of All-Junior days: the so-called "Beginner" class. With classes combined because of the light turnout, the HBeginners" in many cases began trouncing the Juniors. Are these "Boy,Wo.l)ders" the world champs of the future? Hardly. A quick check back in the 01' files revealed that one of these "less than three races" whiz kids garnered third in his class at Hopetown last year. Hmm, makes you wonder who are really beginners! Among those who deserve credit, therefore, was Tony Pinneri (Yam), as he continually drew away from the 100 Junior class pack by large margins all day. In can trast to his grand slam were the 125 Juniors, who provided spectators with a closer and much more exciting battle. Ron Rose (Bul) and Mike Huddleston (Ric) diced it out in mota one righ t from the start un til Mike smoked it too much and slid out. Ron then stretched his lead until, with an easy two laps_ to go, he derailed his chain and finished last. Even tual winner for 'the day was the more consistant J. Tassano (Bul), followed by Rose. A slim field (seven riders) of 250 Juniors was shown the way by Mike Mansfield (CZ) as a somewhat fuller field of 500s was more convincingly trounced by J. Haberman (Hus). third place win. The Intermediate 125 racers were throwing around the dirt on the MX track at the same time and were grouped yards behind the Seniors, unable to keep up the .P ace mas t of the time. Jack Hazard ran into good luck acres today and is beginning to make the rest 'Qf the Intermediates look out-classed., starting to win like it's gain' out of ~tyle on his Bul 125. Vince Balch (Puc), Steve Bealer and Stephen Dahlstrom both on Jlultacos were the next three contenders, ending up in that order and pu ttin' on' some good evenly matched racing. • Next Sunday at the Saddleback Park facilities the AME will end their super-stud-drawing CZ Series racing action. On the same day the AME will race on the Arroyo Cycle Park track for the first time and on the second Sunday of each month from now on. To get to the ra'ce site take Interstate 15 to Devore exit, west on Devore Road and be among the first AME racers to test the Arroyo soil! The 100 class at Muntz has, for the past several weeks, been a huge-lead, . grand-slam affair for the various winners. Today was no different as it was Suzuki-ride Arnille Delatorre's turn to play "out ahead and all alone". Also, as is the custom, the 125s promised to provide the most excitement. The entry roster included the top three f'lnishers at yesterdays' Bay Mare MX, as well as Everett Angle, recent ruler of the Muntz 125 class. The spectators were not disappointed. After close and varied f'mishes in the first two rounds. the win could have gone to any of five riders in mota three. Larry Burgess (DKW), however, f'mally got his head together and left one and all behind, taking with him f'lnt place. gold. by Tom Corley CARLSBAD, CAL., Sept. 3, 1972 American Motocross • Today's Enterprises CZ Series race held on the Carlsbad track was topped off with rain that resulted in a slippery third mota track which caused some' of the racers to gain and lose positions. La Habra Yamaha 'Feam pilot Frank Rowe of the 125 Senior class was the pot of gold winn~r today as he and Coast Mota Cycle owner Peter Maly, on a very rapid CZ, both out-distanced the rest of the pack by a few minutes time. Maly at. first seemed tn have an edge over Rowe but as soon as Frank Cranked up his reed-valved Yammie, it was hands off. Rowe also showed the best mudtiding tactics when the ground started to get kinda wet in the third mota from the heavy precipitation. The racers felt like they were racing in a skating rink. The hot set-up would've been to have some snow-spikes on the tires. Behind the two Senior terrors; Rowe-Maly, came the Ring Cycle I-Iusky 125 being thrown around by motocrosser Chris Grodzicki for the bY?~ The Leather Shop 11171 Virginia Ave•• Lynwood, Ca. 90262 (213) b32-7419 UNTZ CYCLE PARK wan.tedlJ\J' 1000 acres - hills, streams, sand 7 days Brlng-,-blk....
