USMRC Motocross _ by Pat Gross EL TORO, CAL., Sept. 8, 1972 - Dave Carlson may have gotten the lion's share of the gold, but the glory went to Gaylon Mosier. The Mabee Tire Series resumed with a bang" as the 100 Expert race got underway. Davy gathered gold easily in the 100, though Bob Stem grabbed the first moto to rack up second overall. The 125 was a little tougher on Carlson. Newcomer Pete Maly (CZ) poured on the pressure in the first two motos. Davy held him off as long as he could, but Maly finally got the better of him in the third lap of the last race. Still, it was a solid win for Davy. . The 250 was another story. Davy seemed set on win number three, but he ran into trouble in the form of Gaylon Mosier. Carlson got a quick start, but the Malco-mounted Mosier had the race won by the second lap. The second moto feU to Morris Malone, with Mosier tailing him all the way. Moto three was all Mosier's, from the snap of the rubber band to the wave of the checkered Oag. Morris was second overall, Steve Stackable (Yam) third, and Davy fourth. Ricky Lloyd came from nowhere to win the first mota of the 500, but that was all Gary Cochell would let him gel away with. Cochel! took the last two, to win by a margin of 25 poin IS over Lloyd. Third was a disappointed Bryan Breker, whose good starts seemed to slip away by the third lap. John Heemsbergen and Kevin Crawford are the Intermediates to watch. Each swept a class, John the 125 and Kevin the 100. The 100 was a combined class, and Kevin had the audacity to come in second behind an Expert in each race. As for thel25, it could scarcely be called a race, at least for first. Heemsbergen and his Suzuki simply smoked off the line with the pack in hot pursuit. A definite no-eontest. The other Intermediate winners turned in fine riding jobs, both with two' firsts and a second. In the 250, it was once again Don Stenersen (CZ), and for the 500s, Bob Crecelius (Gre). Bryan Menne (Suz) and Johanna Stenersen (Hod) are the one-two punch coordinates with local, state and federal land-governing agencies to promote more recreational areas for this popular form of family recreation throughout the state. in the 100 Junior. Each has won consisten t1y, but in separate divisions. Now, if both were in the same division ...? A couple of Juniors really creamed the competition, sweeping two classes apiece. Dave Messersmith (Yam) was the super-whiz in the 500 and 250 I. Ron Schwab, first night at El Taro, sizzled his CZ to wins in the 250 II and 125 II. What if they had been in the same 250 division? Ne'xt week's Series race may settle that question, and others.
