SALT LAKE MX ~ w Z w -' (.J >(.J A strangely familiar-looking motocross rider whom Kansans identified as John DeSoto shows how to beat the prairie heat, relaxing in a stock tank between motes at Baldwin MX track. And he wasn't even riding a cow. Wheelsport MX By Lyle Fergus LAWRENCE, KANS., Aug. 20, 1972 It was quite a weekend at Baldwin-Motocross Park with John DeSoto coming all the way from Long Beach, California to put on a mo tocross school and race in Sunday's motocross. The Wheelsports had a large water tank for John to cool off after each race and this proved to be a great attraction for men and women alike, when John stripped down to his undies to jump in his cooling-off tank. In the pro races John has a new 450cc Kawasaki which he said has handling, power and reliability. But for the Baldwin Motocross Kat Suzuki in Lawrence gave John a 250cc CZ to ride, also Ern's Yamaha in Lawrence had a 360 Yamaha standing by if John decided to ride in the Open. John said the Baldwin track was very good, but could be longer. He said the main reason that the Midwest riders were not as good as riders on the coast was that on the coast they have motocross three or four times during the week and so they ride a lot more. John thought Gary Witt and Mike Krebs were about the best around here, bu t they won't get any better until they get some competition. (I guess they won't ...;. _ need to get better until they go somewhere else.) The big battle in the 125cc Senior was for third place as Randy Shekell, top flight DKW pilot from St. Louis, was very seldom out of the lead and never out of it at the checkered flag. 300cc Senior was: where are John DeSoto and Gary Witt? Jim Huff had the lead and kept it for the en tire first moto. John and Gary and another unknown rider crashed on the first lap leaving the hot shoes in last place. Gary never quite got going again, but John was up and moving clear through the pack until he was in sight of the leader at the finish. In the second moto John was not quite first off the line but took over the lead in the first corner with a high speed bank off the haybales. (You could hardly believe it if you saw it, so how can I tell you about it?) From then on it was Joh,n out ahead followed by Gary Witt then Brad Emery and James Huff. The last moto was about the same, except Randy Allen slipped into fourth place at the end. Mike Krebs came down to Baldwin Motocross Sunday. Is there any need to a ..sqvarna say who won the Open Senior? Elmer Smith, Yamaha rider from Iowa, looked like we might have a new stat' in the Open Senior, but his Yamaha lost all its fife and nobody would loan him a sparker so Elmer was out for the day. From then on it was Mike Krebs all the way. It was Dick Young's day in the 100 Junior winning aIl'three, even though Tim Barrett was doing his best to keep that from happening.. Darryl Berry won two motos for the overall in the 125 A division. It was quite a different story in the 125 B with three different winners, the first three places overall, each won a moto. Verle Vallier stayed closest to the leader in the other motos and came out number one. Robert Smith got first overall in the 300 B Junior and he didn't even win one moto. Second overall David Byrd won the first moto and Leo Butell won the other two. Leo quit racing for a while, but it looks like he is back now. Ron Williams won one moto, placed second once and got one fourth, and this was good enough for first overall in the Open Junior. by Larry Knop Photos by Paul Vogeler SALT LAKE CITY, UTAH, Aug. 27, 1972 - Cool weather, hot racing, District 26 ,points, and. a special Old-Timers race were the order of the 'day at the Continental Motocross Association's motocross. Most instructive but hardest to watch (blink and he's gone) was Open class Expert Bob Brown. Bob's shadow, Dennis Packard, developed problems with his Open class machine, leaving Bob and his CZ to stomp the class, turn the fastest lap times of the day, and relax. Possibly the best, races of the day were in the 250 Expert class, where Kenny Archibald overcame his personal CMA jinx to take overall honors. He had to do it without winning a single moto, too. The first and last moto honors went to second overall Don Fuller while Dennis Packard took the middle moto, third overall. Among the 200 Experts, Penton 'rider Tony Jacobs still had everyone's number, although Mike Droscher showed that that situation may ~hange one of these days. In the 125 Exp-erts, it was Peter Crandall with first overall, also on a Penton, although he had to lap within two seconds of the fastest time of the day to beat ou t Hodaka-moun ted Bob Plumb. To top off the Penton victories, David Crandall took the 100 Expert class from Craig Snow. Trophy presen tation was one of the best parts of the race, thanks to the comedy team of Robinson and Cooley. The next CMA race will be the two-day Utah MX Championship, October 7th and 8th. This is always one of the top and toughest sportsman even 18 of the year. See you then.
