As the chute was coming out, the
machine bounced over twenty feet into
the air and sailed for over four hundred
feet. (Completely wiping out Evel
Knievel, Super Joe Einhorn, and
anybody else's record.) When the
machine fmally stopped Jon got away
with only a small scratch, due to the
safety features built into the machine.
Once again the Hawk kept its perfect
record of never coming to a successful
halt after a 200 mph run. Damage to the
machine was extensive and will take two
or three months to repair.
With the Honda Hawk stealing most
of the limelight of the event, there were
also 106 other entries at the even t.
Don Vesco did not finish his dual
750 four stroke Yamaha engine package
in time so he brought his dual 350 two
stroke set up from last year. But he
could not get all the bugs worked out
after first setting a 250cc record of 172
mph.
Bill Wirges with his dual-engined
Kawasaki had engine and transmission
problems all week and the best he could
manage was 192.
Warner Riley, the Okie from Skokie,
lllinois, upped his record in the
APS-A-3000 class to 206 on his 92 cu.
in. sportster. With that he also took the
unofficial record of the world's fastest
conventional motorcycle away from
Leo Payne. Warner had also built the
engine for the Harley L.S.R. machine.
Bob George had his super clean
dual-engine Harley running well until
the return run for the class record when
the rear engine blew. Bob managed 217
on the completely unstreamlined
machine during time trials but did not
set a record.
54 records were set during the week
at Bonneville. All are worthy of
mention so look over "the results listed.
Two severe acciden ts happened at
the event. Jim Buckmaster, Sacramento,
Calif. died of head injuries when he got
loose and came partially out of the shell
of his streamliner. He was practicing
starts and stops when one of the skids

dug in causing the machine to flip while
traveling somewhere around 60 mph.
Jim's death marks the first fatality at
Bonneville on a motorcycle.
Mike Cash, Carlsbad, Calif., had a
similar flip while making a run and
suffered head injuries. At last report,
Mike was still unconscious at a Salt
Lake City hospital.
It looks like stronger roll bar and
head protection requirements for
streamliners will be necessary in the
future.
A memorial fund for Jim
Buckmaster's wife and five children has
been established. All contributions
should be sent to:

Honda pilot Jon McKibben, outside the Hawk, tells other speed freaks what it's like to be inside
the Hawk. Possibly relating the finer points of 200 mph crashes:
