CD N BONNEVILLE: RECORDS fALL; HONDA By Paul Flanders WENDOVER, UT., Aug. 20-26, 1972. Honda's attempt to capture the motorcycle land speed record during the A.M.A.'s Bonneville National Speed Trials ended on August 24 in failure. However, rider Jon McKibben did . qualify for the !sky/Moon 200 Miles Per Hour Club by setting a class record of 232.717 during the rider/machine safety tests. The Hawk was, at one point in the tests, traveling at 274 (9 mph better than the Harley Davidson record of 265) but could not put together the two-way average necessary to break the record. Three days later, after repairing the damages from a low speed fall while slowing down from the 274 run, the Hawk made another qualification for a record run.
