USMRC MOTOCROSS ELTORO Story by Pat Gross Photo by Ron Lewis EL TORO, CAL., Sept. 1, 1972 Spotligh t on Anaheim's Davy Carlson. Especially after Friday night's action, which found Davy p~tted against the likes of Gaylon Mosier, Bruce Baron, and Tim and Chuck Lunde. Davy challenged in three separate classes, locking horns with the best of the Experts. The 125 proved to be the least of Carlson's worries. Except for a slow start in mota two, his score was perfect. That race was snatched by Dennjs Hazlett (Pen) to gain thjrd overalL Scott Miller, also on a Penton mount, was back to fill in second. Tim Lunde, first time out, had trouble putting, it all together. Bad starts were the major problem. Even so, Tim battled his Bultaco up through the pack for fourth. The first race in the 250 was a cinch for Carlson. All the competition saw was the tail-end of a Yamaha for five straigh t laps. The second moto found is. " CJ) ~ w him in big trouble, 'dead last each lap. Gaylor Mosier took top spot that time, with Chuck Lunde right behind, and Bruce Baron showing up in third. The situation was prime for a hot thITd moto free-for-all. Davy grabbed the lead, closely followed by Baron and Mosier. As Carlson stretched out, Bruce and Gaylon fought over second. A close fight but Gaylon was the victor, second overalL Bruce, first time on a Husky in the 250, took third. Davy was foiled in his attempt for an unprecedented third win. Bob Stem (Hod) will not give up his hold on the 100. Two firsts and a last put Carlson in second. Brad Dutoit was in third, and Kevin Crawford swept the 100 1n term ed iate. Brad also swept his Schoolboy ffivision as ffid Mike Dannelley for the Intermediate Schoolboys. Davy Shifflett broke the Hond~ hold on the class with his win of the Junior division on a Yamaha. ' W ..J U > U Turkey Track A1I c")... Rancli '\/ Jaycees MX at Muntz - - - - by Mark l\1ilford MOORPARK, CAL., Aug. 27, 1972 Every August, the Simj Valley Jaycees hold their wild annual motocross bash. In '70, it took place at Bay Mare, in '71 at Rough Rider, and for 1972, the all·class event moved out to' the increasingly popular Muntz Cycle Park. 'Along with the large turnout came the absolutely fiercest competition seen in this area recently. Only one rider could bring off a grand slam all day, since just one slip in the tightly packed ilivisions could plummet a rider from the top spots to something approaching last. Such was the case in the 100 Junior ilivision fITst moto, where Jeff Black slid out while leading and fmjshed around 20th. Bad luck plagued Jeff the rest of the day, and Foster Chase (Suz) grabbed the advantage to a first place. Jeff fmished far down in the results. The second 100 ffivision saw regular Muntz winner, Steve Smjth (Yam), pitted against Viewfinders GP class winner Steve Pinneri (Hod). Moto one went to Smith, but the second go saw the positions reversed, with Pinneri on top. Half way thru the race, however, Steve's Hodaka decided to see "what was on the other side of the berm". While in the boonies trying to get back on the course, his chain derailed and 100 yards later, snapped in half. Smith won that one, too, but had to settle for thITd overall after a last moto crash. Pinneri ffidn't even get into the results. Dan Hirtle (CZ) topped the firs , somewhat sluggish, ffivision of 125s, while in contrast, the much hotter shoes, Everett Angle (DKW), Larry Burgess (DKW), and Tim Lamar (Bul) waged a bloody battle for the top three spots in the second division. Although they fmished in that order, these three were often all within ten yards of one another and the constant passing and re-passing kept everyone on the edge of their seats. The Simi Valley CZ team came up with 250 Junior John Miller, and he, in turn, came up with the only grand slam of the day, followed by flTSt-time-in-the-250·dass Ken Greene, also CZ mounted. Mike Puckless edged out the second division for yet another (sigh) CZ class win. The sHm fields of Experts were beaten by Mark Cook (Bul) in the 250s, due to his speed, and by" Joe Erwin (Mai) in the 500s, due to his consistancy. Joe had but a 1-3-4 record, but his worthy opponents, Tom Zahnter (Yam) and Joe Veillon (Hus) spent too 'Iluch of their time on the ground to l ,at it.
