i '" ~ w Z w oJ U >U ./ Jim Wilson brought his Valerian's CZ back to Ascot in a very convincing manner. He came from behind to win .11 the 250 Expert motos. by Buzz Baty GARDENA, CAL., Aug. 30, 1972 Jim Wilson, for a period of time a while back, carried the title of Mr. Ascot. There was a moment in his young racing history that, as far as Ascot was concerned, he. couldn't be beaten. Then, one night, he tore up his kcee and was au t of racing for abou t a year. When he did return. it was of an "On Any Sunday" variety at Indian Dunes, Saddleback, and Carlsbad. Last May, Jim turned twenty-one; tonigbt, he turned pure tiger. Jim has looked good the past few weeks here at Lions, as well as at Saddleback and Carlsbad. He was smooth, showing the talent was still there but had lacked a certain fire and aggressiveness. Tonigh t it was all there: talent, speed, and a IIWFRoMA . . . •• -DIE HONDA-750· AN ENGU5H ARISTOCRAT. DESCENDANT OfA LONG UNE Of WINNERS. fROM THEORIGINATORS Of PRODUCTION STREAMLINING t \.. Maybe he was going that fast because this fine looking lady was there waiting for him to finish. bushel basket full of aggressiveness. In all three 250 Expert matos, Jim came from behind to win them all over a really talented field. In the last mota, Bob Messer was leading on his Bultaco, and Honda-mounted Bob Hosford, second. Jim, running in third when the last lap flag was waved by Stu Peters, just literally blew the gas tanks off of both machines to make it a sweep with his Valerians-sponsored CZ. Bob Messer, who hasn't been doing much riding of late, 'ended up second overall, with Bob Hosford getting the show money on the four-stroke. Tim Hart and Bill Payne really put on one whale of a race in the first mota with their Maicos; In fact, at the start of the last lap, they passed and re-passed each other four times in a series of three turns, with Tim taking the checker and Bill getting second. Tim also won the third mota for the Open Experts on-his brand new radial-finned Maico; Payne again getting second, and Joe Johnston on the "Franks" (Yes, that's right. A Franks.) getting third. Tim didn't really come under too much pressure in this third mota, winning it somewhat easily. So wb.y was Billy Payne first overall and Tim, second? Well, it seems like after pulling out a good lead in the first lap on the second mota, the carburetor fell off of Tim's brand new Maico. Exit Mr. Hart and bye, bye first overall. About Joe Johnston on the Franks (Franks?) Kelvin Franks, signer-upper, record-keeper and half of the CMC hierarchy has been building his own scooters from the frame up, with whatever power plan t he felt inclined to use. Joe was on one of his machines tonight with a 400 Suzuki in it. Joe reports the bike to be a reall handler, light and responsive, but says it's gonna take some ge tting used to, alth ough third overall really ain't too shaggy for the first time out. I don't know what in the world you can say about the 125 Expert class, except that it was a complete Team Mettco sweep. Charlie Bower did the deed on his Penton for first overall sweeping all three motos. Mike Garrett on the Mettco Monarch, second; and Danny LaPorte. third on another Penton. I would think now that Charlie Bower would have to be entitled to the title of Mr. Ascot. He has really dominated the 125 Expert class the last couple of months.
