POWER fllfJE® IS THE lAY IT IS! by K. C. Brintnall ADELANTO, CAL., Sept. 2, 1972 The desert has more' to offer the motorcycle enthusiast than Enduros, Hare and Hounds, rattlesnakes and restricted riding areas. It also has a fast IT and half-mile track, featured at 395 Cycle Park, flve miles past Adelanto on, surp~gly enough, Highway'395. Track owner and manager Don England has set up a fast and impressively safe combination of tracks, and the IT course is one of the longest in Southern California. Since most of the track's "graduated" go on to compete at Ascot, England runs the races uder the same rules as Ascot so that the riders will be better prepared. Plenty of action and a few surprises were on the agenda last Saturday nigh t. Many of the racers at 395 are double threats, competing in both IT and half-mile events. Some even manage to trophy in both. Novice 250 rider Orville Van Hee (Oss) proved that two wins are better than oile as he led the field in both the 250 Novice IT and half·mile races. Although Van Hee was the only racer to pull down a double win, several other riders managed to garner a flrst in TT and a second in half-mile, including 100 Novice Jerry Mulkey (Kaw), 125 Novice Brian Coakley (Yam), Open Novice Dan Ress (Suz), and 125/250 Expert Mike Laney (Hod). Half-miler Gaty Roderick took two victories the hard way, winning the 100 Novice Main on his Kawasaki and taking a first on a Yamaha in the 125 Main in back to back races. In the Open Expert TT, Yamaha-mounted Gaty Bevans took an impressive win over a field crowded with excellent riders. Steve Keull maneuvered his trick Red Line-framed BSA into a substantial lead on the flnt lap of the Open Novice half·mile Main and took the win with apparent ease. The 125/250 Expert Main saw plenty of action as half·milers Bob Sanders, Mike Laney, and Richard Sweaney (Kaw) battled it out for the lead. Each took his turn out in front and the tension mounted as they battled it out all the way to the finish line, where Sanders squeaked ahead for the win. • For the fIrst. two laps of the Open Expert it looked as though Jim Steinback (Tri) was headed for an easy win but he hadn't counted on Randall Bowsman (Tri) who sneaked up from behind to take over the lead. Jeff Cesmat (Yam) moved up to take over the second position, but neither Cesmat nor Steinback could catch the fastmoving Bowman. , Bowman's win was expeciall.y impressive since he has been riding for just over a year and this is only his third ride as an Expert. Most of the fastest riders turned out for the Sweepstakes race at the end of the evening, and fastest of them all was Mike Laney, whose win brought him a total of two fIrSts and a second for a night's hard riding. The Hard Luck Award for the evening must go to Richard Lazardo, whose bid to .main tain his leading high points total at Adelanto was thwarted as he feU and broke his ankle in the 125/250 Expert IT Main. For those who dig IT and Half-mile the desert has a lot to offer at 395 Cycle Park. The ThriU of victory, the disappointment of defeat and, most important, a lot of fast safe, fun riding.
