It was a fme, day-long festivity comparable in New World tenns to the running of the bulls inPamplona. One hundred and twelve racers signed up to run eigh t AMA classes covering both stock and Grand Prix motorcycle. They came from all over Texas, from as far away as Virginia and the neighboring states of Kansas, Arkansas, and Louisiana. Tbere should bave been more, for action as unique and a course as challenging as this one. But almost all the races were fast, hard-motored fifteen lappers (one to a class) and the 7,000 or so fans rootet! warmly for their favorite brands. Among the highlights was a ding-dang-dong rivalry among Larry McPhail, Ernest Thomas and Gary Parker all trying to crowd into that first 250 Production place, all on Suzukis. Then Gene Homot forced his Kawasaki from third to first in the 500 Production race, taking it away from Leight Hightower (Suz) and Vance Person (Suz). Vance was doing it with a 250cc bike, yet! But the best contest of all was the 250 GP featuring Tommy Byars, Larry Beall Jr. and, again, Gene Homot swooping madly through the comers, swapping positions nearly every Jurn, about a lap ahead of the pack. Joe Patton was unbeatable on an ill-handling 750 Honda. With it, he won both open classes, stock and GP. Despite the speed and the rather high number of getoffs in the streetcomer turns, only one rider, David Taggart, made the ambulance ride to the hospital. And he was back racing later in the afternoon! I t was all part of the Austin Aqua.. Festival, which happens every year about this time. Next year, if you're of a mind to twist throttles with the Texans make it on down Austin way with your cafe racer. Bring plen ty of ice. Co.
