The change would have been a good idea if things had been given a little more though t. As it was the riders were allowed more laps than they regularly get, which seems to make them happy. For a change of pace and as an in teresting exhibition, Sumner McKnigh t, the speedway rider, and Gene Woods put on a race on dune cycles. For more confusion a third unannounced rider won the event. but fun was had by all involved. Powder Puff, as usual, fell -to the DKW of Johanna Stenerson with a tie for second between Peggy Pekio and Renee Payen. 100 Junior I wen t to Art Stapleton and Steve Rhyan, while Division II wen t to Dan Williams and Dennis Sigalos. In the ftrst Division of 125, Steve David and Gary Elders tied for the first spot, while Henry Wior did it in the second Division. Ron Nicol and Steve Delano finished 1-2 in 250 Division I, while Morgan Malocco and Gary Garcia did likewise in Division II. Dave Bradley rounded out the night with a win in the 500, followed by Jack Wright. The rain started up just before practice, then stopped soon afterward. Just when everybody thought that Mom Nature was on their side, it began again. In the true "Race-rain or shine" spirit, Bob Hunter began to run off the first set of motos. This came to an abrupt end when only two people in the 250 Nov. go could get off the line. Bob then decided to wait until noon to see if it would clear up. It didn't. Motivation in the super slidy-sUck Saddleback slirru: was almost impossible. As one looked around, one could see people on foot in several different stages of Luling down. Riders were doing some of the most fan tastic involun tary slides ever seen, to the delight of onlookers who cheered when someone fell extra well. The best part was when people tried to get out of the pits in their cars. Things got so bad that the fence along the orad had to be cu t open to allow Q!:opk te ~aft. Over 200 riders paid to race Saturday ,and couldn't. so the AMC is going·to have a make race Monday, Sept. 4th (Labor Day). Now Bob figures if 200 riders are going to ride free. why not everybody. So, gang, pay a buck to get in Saddleback Park, sign a release and race for free. This racee will not count toward the Yamaha Series. While on the subject of Yamaha Motocross Serieses, the next race is Aug. 19th, and will require the normal mail-in entry. F I.NAL 250cc MOTOCROSS NATIONAL The final 250cc National Champi;nship Motocross race of the 1972 circuit will be held at the Alabama International Speedway, Talladega, Alabama, on September 2, 1972. This AMA-sanctioned event will be the fmal chance for motocross competitors in the 250 class to maintain or improve their standings. National Championship points will be awarded at Talladega in both the 250cc and 500cc classes, but the 500cc National Championship points will continue to be awarded throughout the Tr-.:AMAlEries.
