RC Ed Souza 1283G) moves into the lead of the 200 Novioe Final at Vallejo Scrambles by passing Richard Gaddy. By James Brammer VALLEJO, CAL.,July 28, 1972 - Now who's sandbagging? Dennis Robinson unleashed reserved horsepower on the final lap in a runaway victory over Larry Drew in the 250 Expert final in scrambles at Vallejo. Aware of frequently used set-ups by Drew to snatch the lead on the final lap, Robinson closed led Drew until that critical lap and then pulled away with a wide safety margin. In the pr~vious week's race Drew surprised Robinson by twice attempting to pass on the left and then going by on the right. This was the third 250 Expert win of the year al Vallejo for the Napa black plate rider. His two previous wins were in April. Randy Booth led a 1-2-3 finish for BSA 500 singles in the big bike class for Exp~rts. Bill Calicura was close in for second. Black plate riders Drew and Jim Saitone were third and fourth. Ed Souza must be ready for the Junior class the way he is running off from the 200 Novice field. He passed Richard Gaddy early in the race and went on for a distan t first over secona place finisher Dave Kleman. Frequently in the Junior class, he will have to run that new Bultaco against the 250's. It was Dave Faria's tum for a win, and he made his winning move by passing John Guglielmetti on the final lap of the 125 Junior class as they came out of the comer in the infield before the jump. The Faria's get coaching from their dad, a flagman on a slow comer. -It also was a last lap move and a close one on the final sweeper that gave Mike Riddell his win over Gary Long in the 100 Novice final. SPINNERS TT SCRAMBLES-------By Jack Roberts TULARE, CAL., July 22, 1972 - A total of 269 showed up at the Porterville Spinners TT Scrambles at the _Tulare Fairgrounds on July 22, for an exceptionally fine nigh t of racing. There were plenty of thrills and spills for the near record crowd of spectators but no injuries were reported. Darrin Schmidlokoter (Yam) made it look easy in the 125 Novice class as he took first place in both the Heat and Main. Darrin is just 13 and has the makings of a fine rider. Tim Boles (Yam) came in second with Kurt Kruse (Yam) bringing up a close third. In the 250 Expert Main, Jack Jones (Suz) gal put in the penalty box for jumping the line bu t he still managed to pass the whole pack and take first away from Ron Tobey (Yam), all the time making it look like he was just out for a Sunday ride. Tobey came in second Chico Short Track - - - - - By J. Noffsinger CHICO, CAL., July 29, 1972 - John Arseniak and Rollen Eskew were both double winners here Saturday evening. Both took the Scratch and Handicap Mains in their respective classes. John righ t now appears to be the fastest in the 200 class here, and makes up the bulk of his time around the track by simply taking the shortest course in the least amount of time. He also has the ability to squeeze through pl~ces where perhaps he should not be. He was pushed by Steve Dietz in both races. Rollen Eskew really shook up the troops here by simply flying by everyone here. Rollen usually gets involved in an acciden t or has bike trouble which delays his getting around the track. Ron Harland, looked migh ty fine in tOOn!C third in the Expert Main. Ron, riding a 200 Bul taco, pushed Jim Hubbard, the winner, and Greg Ferguson, second place, all the way. Ron appears to really get going about the last 2-3 laps of the race. It appears his second wind comes on, and blows him along a little faster. _ with "the Tubber band", Bruce Baseman, bringing up third. Bruce (Bul) has been back East racing but we are ' glad to get him back. Rick Zimmerman (Open-Jr.) brought his aI' Harley "74" out to Tulare. Rick has been racing the big bike on the smaller tracks and doing pretty good. This was the first time he's tried the big track. Walter Price (Tri) brought home first place and Jack Rothstein (Tri) came in second, Zimmerman came in third. This was the fifth race in a series of nine the Spinners are holding in Tulare. These races have all been drawing large rider and spectator turnouts, the Spinners have had many years experience in putting on this type of race. All the riders like the big wide super fast track. CYCLE NEWS PRODUCTS P.O••ox .0·9 ••oc•• Co. 9080' Oakdale Short Track - - - - By Bill Spencer OAKDALE, CAL., July 29, 1972-Opening of Saturday nigh t short track at the Pioneer Rodeo Grounds found a full house of over 120 riders running an action-packed night second to none. The track was in superior shape thanks to Jerry Griffith and the success of this show was apparen t in its first outing. Taking the feature win was Dennis Huff on a 250 Bultaco built by Griffith with ex-motocrosser Mark Musclo getting in some fan tastic slides for second. Despite the fact that most Experts went elsewhere for black points the 21 that turned up were not denied and put on a terrific show. Muscio didn't tak.e a backseat in the 125 Expert bash, though, with .a decided win from Skip Aksland and Steve Hollingsworth. Mark would rather ride this super cushion track than motocross and will be back for more when the operations resume. Of special interest to many was the mini-bike show sanctioned by the Y-AMA. This allows the under 14 set to get in thc action with cards just like Daddy has and Bob Lucero did just that. Pop will retire shortly, right, Roberto? 1--------------"" 'oco "",.. -------------1 UIDE K I ------_..
