With modest admission and free parking, 1 wouldn't accuse the promoter of getting rich, but with a heal th y speedway program and steady local promotion, he is going to keep the wolves away. A sellout is expected next week with the races held during a fair. In Saturday night's Scratch Main, everybody fell down with the Rooney brothers first by running together. The opposite corner got the rest. A Stu Morley fan explained that Morley didn't really fall, he laid the bike down to keep from falling because another rider was down in his path. It required a restart with the Rooney falling again but each taking a separate corner. However, they recovered to finish third and fourth. Stu Morley carried first place money back to Los Angeles and Rich MacMurray from Reno taking second. With Carl Cranke, Butch Corder, and Joe Henry placing in the scratch consolation. That event went exclusively to Northern California riders. Starting from the 20 yard line, Jim Doran won the Handicap Main with Mike Rooney getting second from a 30 yard handicap. Greg Johnson passed Jeff Colard to win the Division II Main. IRWINDALE S P E E D W A Y - - - - - - - - - - - - - IRWINDALE, CAL., July 27, 1972 Rick Woods very nearly pulled off another double Main event win last Thursday evening at Irwindale Raceway ...except he made one of those rare mistakes. In the Handicap Main event, Woods had charged through the field from the 40-yard handicap line and settled down behind second place man Ed Williams to prod a little and find an opening. Williams never gave an inch, however, and when Rick tried a higher line around his foe, he got into turn three a little too hot, spun a 360 degree donut and finally got back into the race in last position where he finished. Bruce Haserot, out of the winner's circle in recent weeks, rode smoothly and steadily to record the Handicap Main victory with Williams second, Mike Bast third after a charge from the 40-yard line, Scott Autrey fourth and riding high and Mike Curuso and Woods trailing. . PL Il1040 (215 872-8100 By Pat Jones SACRAMENTO, CAL., Aug. 4, 1972 The first railroad train ever to win a speedway main event was disqualified. As migh t be expected, the incident occurred in the Division II Main. Sam Vanderhoof came roaring around the last turn in second place to find Howard Codde sprawled on the track in front of him. Vanderhoof carefully missed Codde but ran into Codde's Jawa. Instead of going down, the surprised Vanderhoof found himself still rolling with Codde's bike trailing him, rolling in an uprigh t position while firmly attached to Sam's back wheel. Vanderhoof slowed down, then noticed he was only yards away from victory. So he turned up the wick, bu t his bike refused to make like a freight train and pull the caboose. As Vanderhoof wobbled toward the finish line, his engine began sputtering and stalled just a yard short of the finish line. At this point, fourth-place man Jeff Wagner came around the tum, lost The Scratch Main went to Woods in fme style but he would have lost it with a sligh t bobble, for Mike Bast was glued to his rear Bamm and was looking for an opportunity the whole four laps! Bill Cody and Steve Bast trailed in third and fourth, close to the flying front runners bu t never seriously in the fray. In Match Race action, Scott Autrey came from behind to record a win over Ed Williams. Bill Firnhaber con tinues to improve and showed some class by defeating a talent-loaded Second Division Main event field: Jim Shaw, Dave Garmong, Ralph Castor,. Phil Moon and Barry I dom trailing. Idom was running strongly but fell off just before the checkered flag! Sonny Nutter took the Scratch Consolation event with Bill Cody doing the deed in the Handicap Consolation. This Thursday evening, the Irwindale Eagles meet the Ventura Chargers on 'the fast Irwindale track. _ con trol and rammed into the four-wbeeled monstrosity in front of him. 'The impact knocked Vanderhoof over the finish line into first place and Codde's bike - without a rider finished second. While. the crowd roared approval and demanded that Codde's bike be awarded second place money for falling over the line without Codde, the referee threw out the whole last lap and awarded the win to Paul Orlandi who had crashed earlier· and watched the whole exhibition while lying near the fence. After that exhibition, the first division riders looked pretty tame, John Cunningham, obviously the fastest of the riders competing in Northern California, rolled to an easy win in the scratcb main event, whipping Barclay Trehal by a good 20 yards. The handicap main even t wen t to Bill DuVall riding with a 10-yard handicap. He outlasted the faster riders and Cunningham came from all the way back on the 40-yard line to pick up second place money'.
