'AI«. CarfsbaII An unsung heroine: she counts how many laps you've made. 'I'HI~ ... Story by Kent Nicholls Photos by Bob Thompson & Nicholls CARLSBAD, CAL .• August 5,1972 The ninth race of AMC'S Yamaha Series almost didn't have Cycle News coverage. It seems that every race thrown at Carlsbad draws several jaspers who claim that they're from CN just to get out of paying the $2.50 gate fee, Well, raceway owner Larry Gresmier and his zealous gate girl decided that Bob and I were members of the Gate Jumper Gang which did much to keep us out. As we drove away with heavy hearts and tears in our eyes, an alternate entrance point presented itself and the day was not lost. This was the first time I've been to Carlsbad in over two years and it's been changed much. Things I noticed: it seemed much faster and shorter; the drop off near the starting chut.e was no longer in use; the spectator count was down. One thing that was the same was the quality of racing - first rate. Just "added to AMC's program was a class for mini-cycles. Now minj-crossers take their racing just as seriously as their larger counterparts·maybe more, making this one of the better classes of the day. The micro·racers rode the regular course for three motos like every one else with Honda-mounted Jeff Hewitt capturing the first spot iii all three motos. This was the day of the duel in the 125 Jr. class with Bob Williams (Suz) and Greg Blackwell (Hus) (Who happens to be Mark Blackwell's little brotheL) N l N .... en It) C. :> 0( ~ w Z ..j w U >U exchanging the lead many times. But whenever the checkered flag came out, it was Blackwell in front. The best part of the Williams·Blackwell battle was the second moto with Williams getting the jump off the line and Blackwell only a spark plug gap behind him. Blackwell then got by going up Carlsbad's long hill, only to get repassed by Williams as they went back down the other side. This went on until the third lap of the third moto when Williams unloaded in a soft comer. He remounted and finished second, and second overall. Also in the second set of motos, Open Jr. win'ner Jeff Szueber (Hus) did the catch job of the day, working up from 10th to third and was closing on second place. If the riders in the 125 Beginner class happened to look around, they saw in their presence a very pretty young lady 114el4 "'HI~I~IA Mike Patrick's Competition tested and proven in the toughest terrain in the world! named Gaby Ransdell and her Hodaka. Gaby got a bad start in the second moto but then began to move up and pass people. She had just passed the eighth place man when her little machine broke. Back in the pits I asked Gaby what had happened and she said, "Well, my chain came off and the little things that hold in the mo tor broke, do you know what I mean?" Any distaste that 1 had from my encounter with Mr. Gresmier soon disappeared when I talked to Ron and Bob Hunter of the AMC. Nicer race promoters are hard to fin·d. The Hunter Bros. races are a Ii ttle less professional, a little less impersonal and a lot more fun than most other races I've seen in So. Calif. You should try an AMC race. It just so happens that there's one next Saturday at Saddleback, the tenth race of the Yamaha Motocross Series. • YWHA of COIOIA 1101 E. &1b 51. - Cerona (114) T35-11n FOR HODAKA-aILiTY see your local HODAKA dealer Distributed by Tiger Distributing 653 W.
