The Pie th ora (sic) of Open class
entries resulted in the two qualifiers/one
consy/one final system. In the first
moto Lee Rumph (BuI) took the lead,
followed by Gary Chaplin (Mail. Jack
Borg (Bul), DeWayne Jones (Yam) and
Barry Higgins (Yan).
Chaplin and Borg both passed
Rumph and moved out on the pack.
They finished one-two, while Rumph
and Higgins had troubles that put them
in the consy. Jones finished third and
Dennis Law (Mai) was fourth.
MOLO/Qualifier two held the
excitement as Rick Graszl (Mai) and
Wyman Priddy (CZ) stoked the crowd.
Priddy took the early lead but Graszl
piped him quickly. Priddy regained first
at about the halfway mark, but Graszl
took it back.
Through the whoop-dees and traffic
on the last lap, Graszl still held the lead.
In the sweeper before the big jump
before the finish line, he looked back to
see Priddy coming up. They hit the
jump side by each. but Priddy jumped
further faster and took the flag. Bob
Ismailof (Mai) was third.
In the consy, it was Lee Rumph
(BuI) again and Bob Grodzinski (Hus) at
the head of the field. Grodzinski held in
second the whole way, until the last lap
when he passed Rumph for the win.
Steve Zitzer (Mai) was third, Barry
Higgins fourth.
The Open Final saw Priddy and
Chaplin out front, building a lead over
the field. Rick Graszl and Gary Ingham
(Mai) led the next contingent, followed
by Barry Higgins.
Chaplin took the lead about halfway
through and wasn't seriously challenged.
In the final 500 standings it was
Chaplin. Priddy, Graszl, Ingham and
Dave Doerschuk (CZ).
