Here he does it to Wyman Priddy. who finished second overall. By Tod Rafferty LEXINGTON, 0., July 30, 1972 Going into the last Inter-AMA Torsten Hallman held a 20-point lead over Gary J ones. Both men turned in good rides at Mid-Dhio today, bu t Jones 6-4-4 tally put him ten points up on Hallman, who logged a 5-5-8 today. The veteran and the youngster locked up the Manufacturer's Cup for Yamaha. Husqvama had an outside shot at tying the Yamaha team, and today's one-two finish' by Arne Kring and Torlief Hansen robbed Yamaha of a series sweep. Kring had some braking problems in the final moto and finished second to Hakan Andersson, but he had already won the first two motos. In the first leg, Hansen, Arne Lindfors (Yam) and Kring were in front on the first lap. In the second batch were Mike Runyard (Mon), Weinert, Tripes and Hallman. Hansen soon began moving out on everyone. Kring took chase and wen t by Lindfors. Weinert and Tripes grabbed third and fourth as Lindfors slowed considerably. Hakan Andersson was back in the field. Hansen and Kring had established a healthy margin on everybody. Young Marty Tripes, whose riding style is best described as tall and fast, moved by Weinert into third plate. Hansen and Kring both lapped Andersson, and Tripes was holding an uncontested third some 18 seconds back. Weinert still held solid fourth as Runyard and Brad Lackey (Kaw) raced to catch fifth place man Hallman. Lackey pu this Cobbysaki around Runyard, and Gary Jones also moved by to badger Bradley. Kring had been steadily devouring Hansen's lead and moved by into first in the closing minutes. At the end it was Kring, Hansen, Tripes, Weinert, Hallman and Jones, who just got by Lackey. In the second moto Hansen again leaped to the front, but this time he had Jones and Kring for close company. In module 2 were Hallman, Tripes and John DeSoto. The Pineapple Kid had finished nin th in the first round. Hansen again began his stretching act as Jones and Kring diced for second. So it went· until Hansen ran into trouble and came' around in fifth place. Jones then had the lead" with Kring righ t on him and Tripes, Andersson and Hallman giv.ing chase. DeSoto, again struck with bike trouble, was no longer in attendance. Tripes was really on the move and closed on the leaders as Kring got by Jones into first spot. Tripes and Andersson both put it on Jones and front-runner Kring. The three were running close for a spell, bUI Kring grabbed some more throttle 10 take the win. Tripes was second, then Andersson, Jones and Hallman, who had repassed Hansen. For all the money: ~IIIot=>.. .... Tripes never put it together as well as in the Coliseum. Kring and Hallman led the charge into the first tum, with Jones, Tripes and Lackey expressing their interest in first place. Kring took the lead, bu t J ones and Tripes got around Hallman and were moving up on the leader. Hakan Andersson moved into fourth ahead of Hallman and Lackey. Andersson was running well bu t • Jones moved around Kring in to first place, much to the crowd's delight. The first four were tight for a spell, but again Kring turned it on and regained the lead. Andersson went past Jones and gave chase. Torlief Hansen, after a bad start, had gotten around Hallman, Lackey, and Weinert. Tripes ,fud some sort of problem and slowed way down late in the moto. His left hand appeared to be inoperative, bur after giving it a resl he rejoined the race. The bre'ather dropped him to thirteenth in the final moto. Hansen had gone by Jones into third place, but Kring and Andersson were well in fron t, Kring's cornering was off due to his rear brake problem, and Andersson moved into first in the closing minutes. Hansen finished third, foUowed by Jones, Weinert, Lackey, Peter Larnppu, Hallman' and Bob Crossi. With today's third overall, Gary Jones becomes the first American to win an International series. Jones accumulated 470 points for the victory. Torsten HaIJman was second with 450.
