GARDENA, CAL., July 21, 1972 Dave Aldana had his bid for a second run of five straight Main event wins at Ascot cut short tonight by a quick Ron Moore and a soft spill on lap five. Aldana had some problems getting going in the Main and Ron Moore (Tri) grabb~d an early lead. Aldana got with the program and started after Moore, trying for a first place spot. He put the bike down on lap five, taking a few running, crawling steps to get out of the groove and ended up wheeling the Norton into the infield, through for the night. Lloyd Houchins took up the.... cha:oe after Moore and the two went around 10 that configuration for the next ten laps, Houchins pushing all the time. On the last tum of the last lap, Houchins got by a tiring Moore to power down the straigh t and take the checkered by half a bike length. Mark Williams and DeWayne Keeter came across third and fourth. Danny Kanegae once again set fast qualifying time overall and wen t on to win the Junior Main. Two or three red flags came out, shortening the Main to eight laps but when it was finally called, Kanegae had gotten by early leader Tom Horton for the win. Larry Gino took third to keep his standing as Junior Points leader at Ascot. Kanegae is coming up fast and has broken the previous Ascot record for amassing points as a Junior. This is his second Main event win and the second time be bas been fastest qualifier of the evening including all Experts. John Genn-ai continued to do well in the Pro ranks, winning tbe Novice Main and a special Handicap Trophy Dash. Tom Renslow was second and Danny Hockie third in the Novice final. ·Bodaka. II WOD'I IUD oul of guls before you do. The Hodaka is built for one purpose. To out-last and outperform its competition. How is this done? By refining the same basic, superior design year after year. Perfecting the little tbings that multi-model manufacturers don't have time to notice. Carefully examine the new Hodaka. Notice the trip-set odometer. The featlier-light clutch operation and spring protected throttle cable. And the rubber mounted gas tank. Little things that add up to big things. We only build one bike. But we build it better than anyone else in the world. Sidewinders Pro TT By N. A. Williams CLACKAMAS, ORE.,July 16, 1972 Out of a ten·man Main for the Sidewinders' Pro TT, there were only two riders not - holding National numbers. One was Richard Wascher (Tri) and the other was Gary Scott. Gary had timed in second best with 15:13 (Mark Williams) had fast time, with 15:06). Gary then won his heat race and the trophy dash. Mark Williams was second in the dash and Ike Reed (T.rj), third. The first two from each of the four heats and one from each of two Semis made up the Main. The crowd was pulling for a local boy to win but our choice was Scott. As the pack' went into the first comer, Williams and Scott were side by side. Coming out of the comer, Scott got a little ahead of Williams and held the edge going in to the up-hill tum. Jimmy Jones (Tri) took over second place on lap two. Williams got it back again in lap three and beld it for four _ more laps. Gary was stretching out his lead and by the halfway mark, he had it won. All he had to do was keep running. J ones again moved in to second as Williams tried but just couldn't get back by him. Ed Herrmann (Tri) and Chuck Joyner (Tri) were running fourth and fifth. Joyner rma]ly got around Herrmann and took after Williams, moving up to third just before the white flag came o ..t. Scott, running easily. was lapping the back runners as he took the checkered with half a: lap lead over second place Jim Jones and third place Chuck Joyner. It looked like all the gold in the Junior class was going to Steve Balter (Yam). Steve had fast time for this class and won the first heat and trophy dash. He then took an early lead in the Main. AI Brackenbury (Tri) was second and third was held by Brian La Plante (Tri). Slowly, Brackenbury started to move up on Balter. Time was running 'out as.
