g « ~ z w W ..J l.l > l.l CORONA'S HOT By John Huetter CORONA, CAL., July 23, 1972 Amidst the hot, smog-shrouded hills outside Cor6na, the CMC opened up Corona Raceway's long motocross course for another go in the dayligh t. The cobby course and ninety degree temperatures had the tongues hanging out of everybody's mouth, even the Experts who went 12 laps (about 25 minutes) on the well-watered, butchoppy, hillsides and slick infield. The only rider who looked really strong at the end of a moto was Terry Clark with a solid win in the first 125 Expert moto. He looked ready to do it again, in moto two after getting by Jim BeauchafDp (H -D) when his rear tire went flat. He dropped steadily back, until pitting for a 1 min 22 second tire change that got him back in the race a lap down. He still picked up enough positions to fmish third overall. Bruce Baron won the last moto to take the top 125 Expert money ahead of a consistent Dave Launius (Pen). Richard Eierstedt and Gaylon Mosier, both Maico-riding American Motocross teammates, battled for first overall in the 250 Expert with Eierstedt taking it. Greg Smith was not spectacular but very fast, especially in moto one, to fmish the day with the overall 500 Expert purse. A trio of Juniors swep t their divisions, one in each displacement class. It was Terry Trachy (CZ) in the 500 Intermediate. (All Intermediate classes ran separate motos as a result of reasonable turnouts by the "almost Expert" crew.' Mike Rawley did it in the 125 Junior Division B of the 250 class. The last of the two Expert motos was cut from 12 to 10 laps but there were few complaints, if any. Riding in that heat was a matter of endurance and not much place swapping wen t on after three or four laps. A lot of liquids were consumed by racers and spectators and, for the racers at least, most of it went right back out into the sweat-soaked jerseys. There were some tired Juniors more used to three hlp dashes, rather than the five they ran. Running Springs MX - - - - - ; , . - - - - - - - - - - - - - By Christopher Ostlind RUNNING SPRINGS, CAL', July 16, 1972 - Without the aid of any specific organization's drawing power, the Running Springs track owners put on their own motocross today. A lot of hours have been put into the track's preparation and the condition of the surface was nothing short of fantastic. The water truck was operating full tilt the water crossings were up to an all tim'e high level, and the fresh dirt which was applied to the key riding areas all came together to give the riders the kind of day they were waiting for. Most of the day's action came in the Open class as several very good Novices challenged each other for the overall honors. Coming up with the winning combination of three first place finishes was Jack Smith on a Yamaha. He was followed by hard charging Ben- Del Campo and Bill Pasewark who filled out the top three by taking second and third respectively in each of the motos. Expert riders Bob Maynard, Troy Hollis, George Gaither and Charles Lewis put on one heck of a show as they slammed around the course with sometimes only inches to separate them. The big drop away jump on the downhill straight was especially in teresting as all four riders seemed to turn into an eigh t wheeled roar as they leaped off the starting line together, crashed through the water crossing and then off the jump. Bob Maynard emerged as the dominating force on the track bu t he did have some troubles getting sorted out in the first moto in which he crashed and could only come up with a fourth plac~ finish. He did every thing together for the last two and proceeded to give everyone a look at his tailpipe and then he was gone. Overall winner for the hotshoes was Troy Hollis with a solid 1-2·2 finish to prove that it only takes one mistake to lose it all. There was one' of those outrageous 15-lap Hooligan things at the end of the regular racing and it was won by, you guessed it, Troy Hollis on his Suzuki. Hollis was led by quick Novice Jack Smith for almost the entire thing bu t then Smith dropped out leaving Hollis to coast in for the victory. The other participan ts spen t their time splashing their buddies at the wate,r crossings, and generally just enjoying themselves after a hard day of racing. USMRC Motocross - - - - - - - - - - By Pat Gross Photos by Ron Lewis EL TORO, CAL., July 21, 1972 Look! Flying over thejump! It's Lackey on a Kaw, it's Hansen on a Husky, it's Trippes on a Yammie! No, actually it's Dave Stoltz on a Schwinn.(Schwinn?) You heard right, fans. USMRC's first, and possibly last, halftime show consisting of four Stingrays in a low-speed, laugh-riot of a race. Dave's hands-down win opens up new horizons in his racing career. Namely, does Dave want to trade in his midget for a ten-speed? Following intermission, it was back to Friday night's scheduled motocross starring Morris Malone. Malone, remounted on an Ajay, stole the show with wins in the 250 and 500 Expert classes. Co-starring was Dave Carlson, of 100 Expert fame. Davy was the only close challenger in the 250, as was Gary Cochell (Bul) in the 500. Carlson snared yet one more 100 win, but Jack Hazard (Yam) was a threat in second indicating Davy better stay on his toes. Richie Collins (Yam) had no problem with the Intermediate class over ick Roberts (Hod). Mike Paulsell (Pen) made a surprise appearance in the 125, sailing easily to top points after Davy dropped with mechanical troubles. Ron DiDonato, who picked up a win in the first mota, _ settled into second overall. The 125 and 250 Intermediates were again favored with separate classes. Lucky Merritt returned to El Taro to effortlessly sweep the 250. Richard Duncan and Rick Burkey, also on Yarnahas, placed second and third. The 125 was also Yamaha-dominated with J abo Van Breukelen in first, closely followed by Norm Payne and Troy Breker. . , Payne, on a BSA, came back to take on the 500 successfully. There was noserious challenge as he swept over an unresisting Vern Maxwell (Bul). Brad Dutoit led the Schoolboys on a merry chase, but nobody could keep up with that whizzing Honda. As usual, Dutoit swept the class, and Mike Dannelley and Davy Shifflett struggled into second and third. The Juniors were well-represented by Marty Foster (Hod) and Kevin Crawford (Ric) in the 100 I and 11, and Keith Howell (Bul) and J obo Heemsbergen (Suz) for 125 I and II. The 250 divisions were handled by Mark Gaiser on a CZ, and by Maico-mounted Ray Surprenant. Dave Bradley deserves the spotligh t for his second win of the 500. Still, Bob Dunsire was not far behind, also on a Husky, and Gary Yamashita (CZ) pulled out with a third, even having missed the last mota. USMRC Motocross - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - By V. Lanza EL TORO, CAL., July 19, 1972 Wednesday night racing seems to agree with many riders as the Juniors, Schoolboys and Powder Puffs turned out in even greater numbers than before to compete for trophies at EI Taro. One of the most enthusiastic classes is the Powder Puff where the girls can show their stuff (racing). More and more girls each week are coming out to get into the action. This week Johanna Stenerson made it look easy as she slipped into the number one spot for the umpteenth week in a row. She appears to be unbeatable in the Powder Puff class: Sandy Termin is a pre tty consistent second place and a new name on the scene, Peggy Perkio, ran off with third. The 500 class was a battle between Bob Dunsire and Don Stenerson for first, but Stenersons win in the last moto cinched the title, putting Dunsire back to second. George Smith and Dan Shapard had o no problem with the 250 classes, Divisions 11 and I respectively. 125 John Heemsbergen made the second division of the 125 look easy, by snatching the top spot after missing the first mota entirely. Gary Elders found the first division pretty easy to handle, with Mark Van Camp finishing second. J oh n H eemsbergen's luck unfortunately didn't hold out in the 100 class as' well as the 125. Bryan Menne liked first place too well dOd Heemsbergen slipped back in to second. Bob Santry took the whole show in the fltst division of the 100, while Terry Rosencrans held on for second. With Schoolboy ace Gene Woods out of the action for a while, Brad Dutoit made the Schoolboy win look ridiculously easy, and Jeff Wilson and Jeff Ward seemed to be Ii ttle competition for the most part, finishing second and third. First division Schoolboy was all Ken Morgan, while John Hewitt finished second.
