Spillway Park Motocross .;0 .By Mike Anderson SANTA MARlA, CAL., JUly 16, .1972 - Spillway Park motocross track has one of the most superior track layouts in all of California, but lack of track preparation made for a not-so-fun day of motocross. One person who didn't seem to mind the dust and ruts was Vince Clark (Suz). For the second week in a row, Vince has completely dominated the 125 Expert. winning all three motos after coming from behind. The 250 Expert saw the largest turnout to hit Spillway and with all the crashes and dust there were surprise winners. LeRoy Cushaway (Bul) who seems to be the fastest person in the 250 class lately took over the lead from John Dallaire (Mai) and stretched it out further and further. He should have slowed down a bit because he crashed and got nothing. John went on' to win the moto. LeRoy paced himself in the second moto and easily took the win ahead of Jim Turner (CZ). Dallaire fell and had bike problems, The third moto, it was so dusty LeRoy didn't even know it was his best friend that he ran in to - all he knew is that he couldn't separate his Bul from his friend's CZ. After about three laps LeRoy was on his way saying choice words along the way. Dallaire went on to win the moto and the sleeper Sherman Schneller. took second. The overall winners in that class were very surprised. Jim Turner (CZ) won with Dean York (Suz) second. Pat Legge (Mai) won all three motos to take the 250 Intermediate win. Mike Knopf put together a 1-2-3 to take the Open Jr. class win on his Husky. "Hard-luck" Ma..x Hanburg (CZ) won the nrst two motos only to fall in the last one, ending up second overall. Bob Bowers (CZ) won the nrst moto of the Open Expert after Joe Cushaway (CZ) fell. Joe came' back to win the next two as usual and to take the win with Bowers second. ..: 0. :J « l/J '!: w z w -' u >u The 250 Experts are off and running at Spillway. Morris Malone and Dave Carlson proved themselves experts at the game in more ways than one. "One for me, one for you" was the way it went all night, with nothing left for anyone else. Davy's share of the purse came to S 110 for wins in the 100 and 125 Expert. Morris nearly matched him at $1 05 by mopping up the remaining 250 and 500. The 100 saw Malone on a Kawasaki trying for a third win, but that is definitely Davy Carlson's class. When Joe Flores (Hod) gained a first in the third moto to get a second overall, Morris had to settle for third. Shave McDonald (Bul) was Carlson's closest competitor in the 125, also managing to pull a fmt in the third moto. Keith Crecelius pushed his Penton to a consistent third for third overall. Jobn Van Breukelen (Yam) had no problem tackling the 125 Intermediate once Clay Southerland was out after the first moto. Southerland came in third and Steve Eredia (Pen) ftlled in second. Dennis Cnandler's second in each moto of the 250 brought him a second behind Morris. Tom Darrah's equally consistent thirds landed I1irn that spot behind Dennis. Meanwhile the 250 Intermediates were having problems, especially Richard Duncan. The first moto had to be black-flagged when Duncan's Yamaha jumped off the line gift-wrapped with the rubberband start. They soon se Wed down to serious racing, Dennis Miles (BuI) sweeping the class, Mike Gillman OMS) second, and Duncan happy in third. Greg Smith (Mai) had to go to keep up with Malone in the 500. Jim Scott took third on a Maico, while John Bomenka (Hus) walked away with the Intermediate first. Schoolboys were out in full force, enough for two divisions. Mike Dannelley swept Division I and Brad Dutoit as usual captured his own class, both on Hondas. A few Juniors will not remain so for long. Dave Fry (Hod) in the 100 is one of these. Mike Cooper and Clay Musolf on CZs took Divisions I and II of the 250. This was only Cooper's second time ou t, and Musolf should find I1irnself a new Intermediate by next Friday. That goes for John Burkey (Yam) in the 500. Brad Outoit IHonl continued his domination of the Schoolboy class in USMRC motocross. , ' By Don Benson POMONA, CAL., July 16,1972Probably the closest competition of the day was in the 125 Jr. class, with Ed. Boggs (Pen) and Ken Francis (Yam). Moto one saw Boggs leading all the way' with Barry Nackos second and Francis playing catchup for third. The win for the day was up for grabs at the start of the third moto which saw Boggs again taking the lead only to have Francis pass him on lap four and take the win. Francis: 1; Boggs: 2; Nackos: 3. The roo J r. was a runaway for Fred Willis in the first moto only; for in the second round he was seen going down in the first turn when he got his front whed against somebody's back knobbie. This action resulted in Steve Rosada taking over for the win and the overall for the day on I1is Suz. Mike Culwell (Yam) took second; third place was Jim Abbott (Yam). The 250 Jr. saw a different winner every mota; indicating some close racing. Rick Varvel doing his thing in moto one on a Greeves only to be DNF for the rest of the day, Moto two belonged to the CZ of Bob Freeman who grabbed third place in moto one. Jon Miller after leading moto one for two laps and figh ting his way from a nin th place to the number three finish in moto two put it all together on his CZ for the win in moto three, and the overall for the day. Mike Pera (Mai) was the master of the 500 Jrs. winning all three motos. Chuck Enscoe rode a Husky for second and third belonged to the CZ of Mike Norris. Pera's three moto win wasn't all that easy. The day brought out a very talented crew of Seniors. Richard Eierstedt (250 and 500 Maico) and Rex Staten (125 and 250 CZ) were the workhorses of the day. The 500 class saw Bob Fisk push his CZ to the front and hold it for the win every moW. The first moto saw Eierstedt push Bob very hard but couldn't get by. Motos two and three were a little easier for Fisk as Rich wasn't in shape yet for the two class ride at 20 min. a moto. Third place money was taken by Maico mounted Joe Irwin who rode hard for three thirds. The 250 class was Staten's (CZ) all the way. Rex is a fearless rider and has a super quick bike. Some of you were .probably not aware that Rex took eigh th place at the Super Bowl in the International class, showing that he 'is a very capable rider. Eierstedt took second place money as he did in the 500 class. Third place belonged to Richard Franklin with three consistent rides on his CZ. Eierstedt was heard saying that he was had after two hours of hard riding; but that was the way he felt would get him in top conditioning. CZ was working on their 125 today with Staten aboard. Another two hours of riding. Motos, one and two were not for the CZ, finding out that it was firing on only one plug. Moto three was a bunch different with Staten grabbing the lead on the next to last lap only to lose the win to J df Vidic (Yam). I mentioned earlier Staten's fearless style. Mr, Vidic definitely qualifies with a plus. Jeff pushed his Pen ton and himself to the limit every moto and hung on for the overall. Results - Vidic - Huber - Hazlett.
