Friday nigh t due to the Castle Rock event. This was the big chance for many riders who have not been winning the big bucks this year through the process of elimination. Fast qualifier Chuck Hart crashed in the south turn early in the Expert Main. On the fe-start Ron Moore was up front, after being knocked off his machine in the Trophy Dash. Mel Lacher was running a solid second and held a good chance for the win until he got into one of those wild tank-slapping situations coming out' of the north tum. Lacher was thrawn off the machine and the bike took off. Lacher landed hard on the track. He was later taken to the hospital with a fractured wrist. Another re-start and Moore was in command and running smooth and fast: Then his engine quit, forcing him out of the race. This put De,Wayne Keeter up fron t for his first l\1ain even t win in many a race. He also won the Trophy Dash and scored a heat race win. J ody Nicholas was back on a Norton for the first time this year but after riding H-D for a few weeks, ,!ppeared to have troubles re-adjusting. Paul Conserriere swooped Jody late in the tmal for second place to give Norton a 2-3 finish this week. It was also a first time win in the Junior class for Rick Newby. He was off to a perfect start but Was chased all the way by Steve Nichols. John Gennai took his Yamaha to the Novice win. Randy Bailey held off the hard charging Walt Foster for second. Dannie Hockie turned in the fastest heat on his Ossa but trailed in the final for a fourth place finish. Previous winner, Mike Dannell and his Bultaco 'ran fifth. A special added purse of $100 has been put up by Pacific and Kearny Mesa Yamaha to go to the winners of tl,e four professional Main 'events, The pro riders will be riding in the 250cc and Open classes over the half-mile dirt oval and one of the nation's fastest IT courses. A Sporting Rider feature will also be on tap over the IT course for 125cc bikes. Putter's Chopper Snop will also supply some very handsome trophies. There will be a meeting of the "Committee for Motorcycle and Minibike Safety" at the Civic Center Library, 3301 Torrance Boulevard at 7:30 pm on Wednesday, July 19,1972, This committee, now called the Cycle Awareness Committee, has been reorganized and serves as an ad hoc committee to the Torrance Traffic Commission. The new chainnan will be Mrs. Judy Mace, who has served as secretary in the past, Mrs. Mace is particularly well suited for this capacity because of her enthusiastic efforts to promote cycle safety. Prime considerations at this upcoming meeting are the "Cycle Safety Clinic" and the designation of "Cycle Safety AW'lreness Week" from October 22 through October 28, 1972. Jeff has been putting it on them at Ascot Park's night MX series, too. To date Jeff haS put together an unbroken string of 6 wins. luck you say? Read on. At the annual Elsinore Grand Prix this year, Jeff beat all but one of Saturday's 1,000 entrants, for second overall winner. Sunday, Jack Morgan, on a 175cc Puch, won overall in the 250cc Open Expert Class. Currently Bill Friant is leading the AMA 37th Oistrict Division 2 lightweight class on a 175cc Puch.
