DEALER INQUIRIES INVITED TROJAN TT and FT By Art Loya SOUTH GATE, CAL., July 6, 1972 Another chapter in the point battle for the season's 250 championship in IT and F.T. highlighted Thursday night's action at Trojan Speedway with the two principles, I'harnpion Rick Goade, and challenger Dan Corbett sharing Main wins in near carbon copies of last week's victories. Corbett (Bul) outgunned a IO·rider field into the firsl comer of the 250 TT Main with Jim Millcr (Oss) in close pursuit. Goade. trying to find a hole in the field as lhey carne off the second comer, spilled and never made up the ground he lost as riders narrowly missed him in lhe scramble for the nrsl jump. Miller, looking better than ever, was Lhe overall winner in the Junior Division. One of lhe evening's biggesl surprises was the large turnout of new riders who have never competed ·al the Sou th Gate oval. the sudden invasion of new faces produced potential for a new era al this track. Brian Garcia, a youngster from Santa Ana, complelely fooled this reporter with his perfonnance. After watching his styl during the TT heal (250) in which he finished third, not lo mention his charge from the rear to fourth position in three laps during the 250 F.T. Main; I approached him after the Main and inquired where he has been competing. "Nowhere, this is my first race." he inslantly and smilingly said. In 25-0 F'.T. Main 'action; it was the J.samc story', irs Goad" in deferrse'-of liis _ 250 F .T. title, trailed Corbett in the first lap. Goade caught Corbett for the lead as they raced across the finish line and from lhat point on, it was all over except the chase. With Miller a dislant third, Garcia attempted to take fourth from Summers. Going into the second comer, Summers closed the gate on a move by Garcia, and the resull was Garcia taking a "nying solo" as his mount went out from under h.im in the tangle with Summers machine. Garcia stated, "I'll be back, this is great." Bob Byars (Suz), one of the most popular riders last season, made one of his rare appearances leading every lap of the 125 TT and F.T. Mains for back-to-back victories. Tom Johnston (Kaw) won the 100 TT Main over Larry Thompson (Yam), and then battled Thompson for the first four laps of the 100 F.T. Main before taking the lead and lhe victory. The Buddy Race was won by the team of Goade and Corbett (Bul) making il two straight for the leading pair. Bishop and John Matherson (Hod) trailed the veteran riders in second place ahead of I.. Thompson and Don Hansen (Yam). Matherson, earlier won the wild TT . Main thal was run "backwards" (clockwise) over a 15-rider field resembling a bunch of Kamikaze pilots.
