WILMINGTON, CAL., July 14, 1972Fantastic, absolutely fantastic! The
charisma that has developed around
nigh t motocross racing at Lions Drag
Strip is only fantastic. Two hundred and
forty three CMC 'crossers djd the
Looney Li'ons Fast Cats Shuffle tonigh t.
Two hundred forty three riders, hell's
fire, there are scant few daytime
motocross races at some of the
southland's more famous motocross
courses that draw two hundred and
forty three riders. This charisma, not
only envelopes the riders, but had
captured the fans, who continue to
show up in ever increasing numbers
every Friday nigh t, to watch and cheer

Engine inspection of a very clean, fast Penton.
for their favorite Looney Lions Fast
Cat.
Tonight was one of those njghts when
nobody had a lock on any class, and
none of the Experts had a clean sweep.
Chuck Bower brought his Penton in first
overall, ahead of the Bultacos of Dave
Rodgers and Ken Cook in the 125
Expert class. CharUe rode steady, if not
spectacularly, in the first two matos,
and then won the third mota for first
overall. Dave Rodgers fimshed second to
Ken Cook in the first mota, but then
Ken took a spill in the second mota
which Dave won, and Rodgers unloaded
in the third mota that Bower won.
Tim Hart was competing in the 250
and 500 Expert classes, and managed to
win the 250 class with his Maico, over
the CZ's of Ron DeSoto and John
Vandergeest. Hart fell in the starting
. area, right hander, approaching the
jump, and really got used for traction .
. That knobby tire really did a job on
Hart's left shoulder and upper arm.
Bryar Holcomb, by now I'm sure, is
sorely missing that works Suzuki he
rode at the Coljseum. Holcomb is big
and needs the extra horsepower of that
hot machine. He finished third behind
the Maico of Dave Smith and overall
winner, Dave Pessy's Ossa. In the 500
class, Gary Nixon was on his way to his
first, first place finish in an Expert
mota, and in fact, had a ,afe lead when
he dropped it on the last lap and had to
settle for fourth overall.
John Vandergeest won his first mota
as_ an Expert, winning the second 250
mota. It was another good show at
Lions, another wild one. bu t then in
seven months of covering Lions, I
haven't seen what could be called a
tame shOW.

John VanderGeest (40FI won his first moto as an Expert.
AII-Junior day. There aren't too many
spectators but everybody there IS
in tensely involved in the racing. Every
rider is a hero to the small group of
family or friends that pits for him and
cheers him on. In a very real sense, the
admirers are right, the young (and
not-sa-young) rider' are small scale
heros. While each man may not have too
many fans, they are all dedicated.
It is surprising how many Juniors still
haven't heard of sile.ncers. Even if it's "at
a track, it's no fun to listen to
unsjlenced rac!ng two·strokes for 10
hours. It doesn't really make you go
faster to take your silencer off, guys.
