Huffman was challenged at times by Mike Ricker (Pen) but Huffman's experience and Ricker's dying gearbox kept it from being a close race. Ricker did, however, win first place in the 125 Novice (Under 16). The all time laughter was the Buddy Race. If you think you get big eyes when you go down a steep hill as the rider of a bike, you ought to try it as the passenger. It's r;eally wild. Today's four-legged hotshoe winner was a Husky with Richard Richardson as the Pilot and Bob Massey as t!>e Monkey. The CRC is planning a Hillclimb at Running Springs on July 23rd which looks to be quite an event with camping for the family and horrendous hills for the rider. To s,olve the water problem the track has installed a series of "waterbird" sprinklers around the track which can be controlled by the flagmen between motos. This method was employed today and the complete lack of dust was really terrific. It also means that there are no retired water truck to break down. You really ought to check it out some weekend. The mecca for all us over-age four-stroke fans may be down in Long Beach, residing under the sign of Long Beach Honda's Hi-Performance division. Bill Bell has got that Honda 250XL running right up with the best 250 two-strokes in the neighborhood. At least, Bob was right ninety percent of the time. That ten percent error, when he went wide on a comer letting Tim. Hart by, cost Bob first overall. But his second overall finish to Tim Hart's Maico in the 250 Expert class was not all that shaggy. Particularly when viewed in the ligh t of first place. finishes in the motos. Pessy won the first moto, Hart won the second moto, and Hosford the third. It's one of the few times that I've seen what looked to be a definite horsepower advan tage for the Honda. Most of the good stuff. that Bill Bell has developed for the 250 four stroke is available righ t down at· Long Beach Honda's Hi·Performance shop, including the cam for less than thirty bucks. It will be just a matter of a few days or a }Veek before the entire Long Beach Honda team will be showing up in full force, John "R", Jim McDonald, and ,!ob Hosford. Keep your fingers crossed, four stroke fans, we may get a chance to cheer again. Tim Hart doubled tonigh t, winning the !i00 Expert class on his big Maico, ahead of David Pessy's "big" 250 Ossa, and Rick Brown's Greeves. Where the 250 Expert was a contest, the 500 class was kind of a zapper job for Tim, as Pessy's Ossa was completely out-horsepowered. When Tim is right, he's a hard man to beat. Ray !lopez did his thing again, taking first overall in the 125 Expert class, ahead of Bob Brook's Carabela, and Charlie Bower's Penton. Charlie spent the whole evening in an attempt to get this new Penton to run as fast as the old one, but he hasn't found the combination as yet.
