.. . GRESHAM GETS IT TOGETHER , The move of the night just had to be the way Steve Bast gallantly laid his machine down to avoid the two fallen riders and machines. There wasn't any time for Steve to think abou't altemaLives, just time to react, and that he did, to a thunderous ovation from the crowd, and a well .deserved one at that! Mike had to be helped off the track and didn't feel up to a restart. DeWayne waved off any inquiries about his restarting, so only 'four riders came to the line for the restart. Billy Gray charged around the outside of the first tum to grab the lead, closely followed by Don Cullum, aboard Ed Schweitzer's machine, then Steve Gresham and St,ve Bast. Exiting the first lurn, Gresham's engine quit, dropping him out of the hunt and putting Bast into third. Billy' held off repeated bids from Cullum to hang on to the lead until the fourth lap when, exiting the fust tum, hisengine gave up the ghost with a bang that literally echoed off the stands. At the checker, Cullum had the lead, followed by the only other rider still aboard and moving, Steve Bast. Mike Bast picked up his fourth Scratch Main of the season. The issue was never really in doubt, as the captain of the Bakersfield Bandits took the lead the instan t the gate went up and never looked back. Older brother Steve was close behind, waiting in vain for some small error, which just wasn't forthcoming. In third was Bill Cody, followed by Sumner Z W ...J U >- U It was Jim Gresham's night at Bakersfield. He took the Handicap Main. Ed Williams took marginal lead as the gate went up, although Mike Konle was just outside of Ed, pushing hard. ElUting the first tum of the first lap, Mike got under Ed coming down the back straight. He got even entering turn two, then put the power to the track exiting to take the lead. Ed had not given up and hung right in there, hoping for an error on Mike's part. In the last tum of the final lap, Ed's hopes came to pass, as Mike slipped out just a bit high to allow Ed under and by Uust) at the checkered.
