With many guys going down, Guy Waterson was the only one who took a ride in the ambulance. Guy wnet down h~rd in the second event of the evening and suffered a painful back injury. Home town boy Jay Carter pu t away the win in the second division Main, coming from the zero line and holding back some stiff competition. Taking the win in the Handicap Main was Le,s Chan key from the 30, having a rough time passing Mike CUTOSO and Danny Becker, the shorter handicapped, and holding back Bill Oody and Larry Shaw who finished righ t behind him. Bill Cody took the money and thl; honors in the Scratch Main wi th ... beautiful ride against Mike Bast, Larry Shaw and Ed Williams. The word from John and Peggy Mantz is that this week a brand new track surface is going to be put in. With no horse shows planned for at least six weeks, it should stay in top shape with some good grooming and a little luck.. all the way to take second in the Scnitch Consy. On the Handicap side, Jim was righ t on Mike Konle's rear wheel in the heat, chased Bobby Hardison. in the Semi, then took full advan tage of an error and a break to come home with the bucks for the Main! Mike Mesojednik used his zero handicap to grab the immediate lead, with Bobby Hardison close behind and Jim in third followed by Mike Konle, Mike Bast and Bill Cody. Although the racing was super-close, the positions didn't alter until the fourth lap, when Hardison got i.nto a tum just a bit too hot, slipped out high and just couldn't get back down to the pole as the pack moved under and past. Exiting the first turn of the last lap, Mesojednik's bike suddenly went very sour. Mike immediately threw his hand into the air to warn those behind of his plight and somehow all got around without mishap, except Mike Bast, who got in to the fence and wen t to earth with a thud that could be heard all over the stadium. With Mesojednik off the track, Jim was in an uncon tested lead he held through the last tum to take home the well deserved and long awaited Bakersfield win. Tonigh t was the ninth Handicap Main of the season and Jim is the nin th winner; not one repeat in nine weeks! The Handicap Consolation was somewhat strange from start to fmish, or perhaps I should say from start to restart to finish. On the initial start, Mike Curoso lost it entering the second turn and DeWayne Keeter, with no place to ran straight into his hip.
