CD N " ~ N .... en -' :> :; .., ~ W Z w .... u >u • By Maureen Lee GARDENA, CAL., June 3D, 1972 Mert Lawwill, on his Harley·Davidson, proved again that he is back in full contention by setting the fastest time (22,.59) on a good, no·groove track Friday night. Mert, however, had the bad luck of coming up with a bum clutch so never got out on the track again. The primary chain didn't look too good when they took the covers off, so rather than risk blowing it and tearing up the cases before San Jose he didn't take the chance. Easterner Gary Fisher was on hand to give the local shoes a go after his two wins at Loudon. He moved easily from a Yamaha to a Norton and proceeded to get a very creditable third place in the Trophy Dash and the Expert Main on the unfamiliar Ascot surface, With Lawwill out, the Dash consisted of two Triumphs, Mike Haney and Tom Rockwood, and two Nortons, Dave Aldana and Gary Fisher, Aldana got the upper hand in a hurry and although Haney gave him a good challenge it was Aldana first, then Haney, Fisher and Rockwood. In the Main, Aldana and Frank Gillespie (Tri) endeavored to make things in teresting as they got ahead of the pack, Aldana bobbled badly on the' north turn and Gillespie shot in to the lead after passing Fisher on the south turn when Gary went a bit too high, From then on it was a bit of a cat and mouse game and the moment Gillespie went high, David pulled down under him and that was it. The most interesting racing was between Rockwood, Keith Mashburn (Yam) and DeWayne Keeter (H.D) in the earlier laps. Keeter finished up with a fourth place ahead of Rockwood, with Mashburn back to eighth. In the Junior division it was a solid Triumph show.. Tom Horton was looking for his fifth win of the season but it was Denny Kanagae who had set the fastest Junior time. Come the Main, Kanagae required a spark plug change on the line and then went on to win the race and set a new Junior record of 3:54.10 beating Horton's record for ten laps of 3:54.41. Larry Gino got the early lead with Horton and Kanegae going at it behind him and Brian LaPlante and Ramon Perez swapping places further back. It could have been one of the best Junior Mains in a long time. For a bit it looked as if Gino was holding Kanagae and Horton up because once past him, they pulled away. Horton tried, bu t he couldn't make it. The Noyice division also provided some diversion for the evening when the AMA ,technical committee tore down the three first places in the Main. Earlier in the heats, Rick Hocking (Yam) blew them off in his race but could fare no better than a ruth in the Main. John Gennai on another Yamaha took his heat with Mike Dannel on an almost silent Bultaco (fully muffled) in the second spot. Come the Main, it was Danny Hockie (Oss) on the pole. Immediately, he and Jim Keener (Yam) got into it but it wasn't long before Gennai and Mike Renslow appeared on the scene. Down the back chute, Gennai passed Hockie who would pull up on him in the. turns but lost it on power on the straights, and the longer the race went on the more the Ossa slowed, but Renslow still couldn't move up into second spot. Following the event, the tech inspectors moved in and checked all three machines. The results (and the purse) were held up pending an official hearing on Hockie's bike as it had more piston ports than the AI\1A·approved model. As soon as Gillespie went hi~, Dave pUlled down under him and that was it for the Main.
