Records Fall for Scally, Hernandez By Bill Spencer SAN JOSE, CAL., Nov. 27, 1971 - In near classic precision, veter an Expert Bob Scally p ulled o ut a c oup de gra ce and se t a new ma in even t re cord in one fell swoop . In the process, all the indoor records were reset with new Novice Steve Hernandez set ting the fast eight-lap h eat an d three-lap trophy dash while Scally copped th e fast est l O-Iap Semi an d 15 -lap Mai n. It all b egan in th e o pe ning m o m en ts of the qualify ing h ea ts wh en Nick Th er oux, last wee k 's wi n ner reset th e fast he at tim e with a I :03.65 0 and j us t two heats la te r, Hernandez was ch ased aro und th e asp halt by Scall y ' and low ered th-e reco rd to a I :03 .345. Scally tried 'to lower that mark in the third regu latio n heat b ut only got as far as a 1,03.382. With the small asphalt track taking its toll of riders the four heats went off in ra ther good style ' with Jeff Hammond bea tin g Hern an dez off the line in the firs t h ea t an d Dave Lewis get t ing th e jum p in t he second over Theroux. Sc ally h ad the third easily andS teve Foster followed A l Kenyon aroun d for th e fourth . All times were in the 1 :03 area indicating the track was in much b etter condition than last week when oil was spread from one end to the other. The first semi wen t to Scally in a reco rd time of 1:18.311 an d Scally n ever looked so good. His deliberate m o ves into th e corners h as him gifted wi th a rare st yle. He st arts wi th a fervo r of h igh RPM ' s and weight distribution th at puts h im righ t in to th e firs t corner almos t lay in g on the gro un d. For the second semi, Al Ke nyon go t the jump over the Como roto Honda and looked to be in good shape until about three laps from the end. Theroux was har d on the Sonny Kenyon racer and h ad given Al th e tap more th an once. Dro pping into th e b ack t urn , Kenyon let a little dayli ght show and T heroux fill ed it an d in th e p ro cess knocked Al to th e fe nce an d off th e m otor. The track was fast, ma ybe eve n t oo fas t, as the ambulance was busy with inj ur ies. Dean York and Pe te Mill er collid ed just ove r the j ump in the 12 5 Sr. class an d o n e rider said afterward h e was sure h e h ad hi t Dean in t he head with h is boot! Both b oys showed evidence of knobbies on th eir jerseys. The re-s ta rt saw V in ce Clar k, for nin e prc Vl OUS races has b een a bridesmaid and never a bride, do h is thing. He t ook the lead each time for th e first overall ; maybe the sp ell is broken. Sue Bowen (Suz) had some st iff competition from Penton mounted Kathy Montgomery but was ab le to edge her out for the win, in the Powder Puff class. Johnny Grossin i (H us) had h is 250 Sr. nemesis Jerry Johnson (AJ S) to co ntend w ith and you can always ' d ep en d on some fantastic riding with these two. Johnny rides high on the berm and Jerry invariably tries to pass on the inside. Every now and then Johnny goes a little too high on the berm and such was the case today. Greg Robertson of Mid Valley CZ team was right there to gain the advantage so Grossini settled for th ird overall with Johnson and Robertson first and second. The Slo-Pokes referee had a surprise for several riders today presenting them Intermediate cards. These gu ys will form the nucleus of the new class in this district but until more are classified they ride with the Seniors. The gr oans were heard through out the valley . For th e firs t time out with the b ig boys they di d well . The Open class saw Intermediates take third through six th respectivel y with Senio rs behind th em . The 250 Jr. Div. B saw some fan cy spectator racing in addition to on th e sligh test expecting Theroux to give a charge and he d id just that, but not exp ec ti n g Scall y's move he hit him hard enough to cause his own bike to fall. Scall y got away clea n with only Theroux lying on th e tra ck. The uproar d eafened the noise of th e motorcycles as the fa ns th ough t th at was the greatest thing th ey had seen since Knievel did his t hing in th e Co w Palace.
