Cook Wheels to Two Wins; Buirley Racks Up 125 Class By Jerry Shipman . GOOSE HOLLOW, ORE., Nov. 14, 1971 - Bill Cook showed his winning form today by wheeling o ff two Expert wins in the 250 a nd Open class. It was no mean feat because of th e super sticky conditions of th e very wet course. I t had rained all week and finally stopped the night before. This and the high clay content of the soil caused numerous riders to call it quits for th e day and be co n ten t to b e spectators. Those who " st uc k it out" and managed to keep their machine dry a nd going on to finish were rewarded by getting more points towards the Goose Hollow Northwest Championship Penton Series and the $ 5 ,0 0 0 in cash and merchandise. Four other ra ce plants holding even ts and fou l weather (although it was partially sunny dull day) kept the number of total riders down to 85. Many 250s couldn't make it up the scratch chute so they and all the smaller bikes h ad to be rerouted to newer portions of the track. The next race will have a new "winter track" that will be a little flatter and not quite as difficult to get around. To get things going in the 125 Expert class, Butch Waymire (Ric) and Ken Buirley (Pen) had their usual handlebar rattling contest to see who would be first in the comer with Butch com in g out first. Ken re ally gave it all he had and got arou nd him th row ing mud a nd slime all over like the 400cc boys, too. I n the second moto Butch re ally slowed down, stopping co mp letely and went b ack t o the pits d efeated b y b oth Ken's Penton a nd the super sticky mire. The 250 Experts reall y saw why Cook is a real " su p er mudder " , Bill could do not wrong in the mud a nd was even making airborne jumps and full lock power slides. After ge t ting a n ew 4 .60 knobby on his new Yamaha, Rick Poulin reall y started hauling and actually passed Bill on the straigh t, ch oppy section before the long, rough uphill. Coming aro u nd again Bill was back in com mand with Rick nowhere to be seen. Rick had fall en, gotten passed then watered his Yamaha a little a nd fi ally go t st arted n again to c hase Cook only to have it quit . Larry Mascotte (Mai) got in for the second slot and in front of Bob Rush's CZ. Cook also had his own way in the Open class with Jay Terry 's Maic o ready for a slip up th at never ca me ab out, as Cook really put on a good sh ow for the 250 plus spectators who showed. Behind these stout-hearted men John Smits (Mai) a nd Dave Ringel (Hus) were having a good b attle for third place. In one moto Dave would finish high, in th e next moto John w ould. In th e final tabulations the p o ints sh owed a ti e which is as close as y ou can get.
