Huff Handles LaGrange By Bill Spencer LaGRANGE , CAL. , N ov. 28, 1971 Old man Ray Huff had ab so lu tely no trouble in h andling all come rs in th e 250 Expert Main Even t in today's second o f fo ur series a t the LaG ran ge Rodeo Gr ounds. While th e track sported th e firs t real mud run of the year, b y Main Even t tim e, it was j ust ab out what everybody liked to run in th is tim e of y ear . Huff, o n th e Zakarian and Huff Pursan g, sti ll main tains a fan tas tic ab ility to rid e fu ll b ore and beat th e youngs te rs de spite hi s 41 years; h e j ust sta rte d la te . He d oesn't ride class "C" anymore d esp it e h avin g run wi th the likes of Dick Mann and, wh a t's m ore, he doesn't want to. lie has all the fun just riding in the local sc ram b les an d he does it we ll enough to sport a b lac k pla te. He hadn't b een quite as fortuna te in the h eat with J im Saitone leading fr om st art to fin ish, but fo r th e Main, it was all Hu ff, at least until the end of the third lap . Clark go t tir ed of th e lead in th e next corner and so he dropp ed it leaving the lead t o Jeff Davison wh o was re ad y fo r th e r est of the race. While Clark d o esn 't n ormall y ride in scramb les anymore, he lo ves th e mud an d gives it a try anytime h e can. Daviso n had no trouble h oldin g o ff Larry Dr ew fo r the win and Saitone m o ved up to take the third spot on h is super fast 400 Maico. It was n't t he first win fo r th e young Davidso n ace. Ninth in Row to Ace Skiver By Linda Fleming MONROE , WASH., Nov. 26 , 1971 Randy Skiver won h is n inth c onsecutive 250 Expert A Main t onight at th e Monroe Indoor Sh ort Track. He led from th e first of 10 laps, with Darrel Hendrickson taking a sec o nd . Pat Marinacci won the B Main and took fourth in the A. The 125 Expert A Main was a different story. Duane Hendrickson won, with twin broth er Darrel comin g in for a close second. T he 250 Novice A Main was led b y David \Vhorten and Todd Tracy w o n th e 125 Novice A. Riders from 4-years-old comp ete d in the Min i divi sion. Super Mini was won by Kenny Pitts , while Butch Brown took th e Mini tr ophy. A total sign up of 247 riders were o n hand to enjoy th e evening's program. Due to th e lar ge numb er o f rid ers turnin g o u t this year , th e program h as been ch an ged. Fro m the heats (which ar e timed) rid ers advance directly to a main. Th e wi nner of the main has the option of forfeiti n g h is trop hy and rid ing the nex t m ai n . With out th e advantage o f semis this still gives each rid er a chance a t th e A Main . The Sh o reline Lions Club m ember s are th e promoters agai n this year, and they hav e attracted m emb ers of nearby ch apters to jo in in the fu n and hard w ork. All p ro ceeds from t hese ra ces go to chari ty . There w ere approximately 2200 sp ec ta to rs, b u t th ere is ro om fo r many m ore , and th e b uilding is heated. They ar e Bob Jones, a former Lockheed Missiles & Space Co . emp lo ye , and Don Luby, who was wi th Philc o- Ford. The two are a lso n eighbors on Channing Aven ue in Pal o Alto. Th e sh op whi ch opened re cently will deal in accesso ries only , not bikes. Helmets, leather cl othing, and items for b ikes are among the lines st ocked. By Lo re tt a David so n LA GRANGE, CAL ., De c . 5 , 1971 Th e Westside Ea gles M.C. today staged the third in a series of four scra mb les with 191 riders ap peare d to race in the mud after five da ys of rain . A cr owd o f 500 sp ectators were o n hand to en jo y it all. T h e 12 5 Novice found Richard Gio in firs t place to stay all the way. Graig Scr oggin s held second with two b ikes tangling o n the fin ish lin e w ith o ne being dragged ac ro ss the line by an o th er. Mark Asbill jumped into an early lead being pushed hard by Ted Davidson with T ed taking o ver first on the seco nd lap leaving Mark b ehind to b e pushed hard b y Jeff Davidson wh o clip pe d h is fender an d fell, in the 125 Exper t Main. Steve H ollingsworth , rid ing h is fir st Junior race , did a tremendous j ob winning the 175ยท200 Junior Main and most of the riders fell at one time or an other before the ra ce was through . Paul Kildal on his new Maico showed the way a ro u nd the track to all the others in the 250 No vice Main to take th e win from Dav id Holland. The 250 Ex pert Main was a re al sh ow of speed and s kill as Ray Huff and Ro y Win ters dueled well ah ead of th e pa ck t o ta ke the brass in th at o rder. Don Whaley ridin g a sm ooth rac e ro de in to vic tory ci rcle firs t with Paul Kildal c omin g fr om th e b ack of th e pack to tak e second p lace in the 500 Novice Main . Dave Russell led the 5 0 No vice Main all the way with Allen Sagouspi riding second until h e bit th e dirt to take home bruises, leaving second for Garry Trammell wh o rode lik e the devil was after him. The 500 Expert w as o ne of real excitemen t with the p osit ions changing several times b efo re th e checkered n ag de cided the winners . Mar k" Asb ill riding a new BSA MX did a great job of h olding off the likes o f Huff a nd Davidson, who really applied the pressure. Jeff finished sec ond and Ra y third , (R esult s on page 48) Marysville MX: Draws 200 Surprised Riders By David :'IlcElyea MARYSVILLE, CAL., No v. 2 8,1971 Just under 200 riders fo un d their way to the new motocr oss course in th e Feather river b ottom b etween Yuba City and Marysville today . They were surpri sed to sa y the least, to find a gen uine, natural terrain , ov er a mil e long co urse. A t first th ere were mi x ed feelings abou t it but by the end of th e d ay th ey love d it . Within o ne la p it separated th e h ighl y experien ced rid ers from the inexperienced rid ers . This fact w as very ap paren t when the 125 Am / E x. class came to th e st ar ti ng lin g, th e m ost co mpeti tive class of the d ay with eight Exp erts an d four Amateurs. By the end o f th e first lap Eddie Br own, Lonnie Forman an d Kurt J orgens en b egan p utting on a tre md no us ex hibition o f speed a nd sk ill. Bro wn to o k the first moto, Forman th e second an d J o rge nse n the third . Forman came up o vera ll winn er wi th J o rgensen second. (Results on page 48)
