i Foley Cinches Stolees, M(Caul Top Salinas : District Title By Bill Spencer SAN JOSE, CAL. , Nov. 26,197 1 -Jim Foley wrappe d up h is third bid for ~ Numbe r I in District 36 Scramb les w racing sc ene t onigh t with a wire to wire Z w win on the slip pery 1/12th mil e a sp h a lt -' indoor track a t the o San ta Clara County )o fairgrou nds. With 51 riders in th e 250 Expert class, the final run for the night w ould be f or II p oin ts and with John Gennai unable to start, even as a n a lter na te , it was all Foley. The great I}umber of riders in six heats of a ction sufficed to bring only one man directly to the Main w ith the sec o n d place man going to the semi. As Gennai made his way to the starting position he was quite forlorn as he was re legated to a b ack row wh ere passing is very difficul t. Needles s to say, he didn 't make the fir st two spots but did manage a c om m e nd ab le third . The procedu re for starting is t o pick a ball out of a hopper and line up that way , with one b all missing , it ma d e for a difficu lt situatio n as John was the last man to pick in his heat and he didn't have too much of a ch oice. For Foley , it was a night of elation, he hadn 't found himself in the front rows too often a t Orland a n d knew what it was like to have to sit on the back row. Tonigh t he h ad a pole position . ' Lining up th e Main put Fol ey a t the number one sp ot with Gennai pushing out as the a lternate . This was not well received by some of th e o th er riders wh o had fo regon e their ch an ce and ch a nged o u t of leathers . The point w as th at John wa s ready t o try a n d start while n obody else was a n d sure en ough, o ne rider wa s mi ssin g. J ay Kanem oto had se ized his m o t or a n d w ould be unable t o ride. Motocro ssers and rough scrambl es riders get togethe r to d o battle on c o mm a n d ground. Today's races were that way except for lacking in the number of entries. The morning broke c o ol an d rainy, keeping ma n y of the c om p et it o rs at home by the football TV, but th e dyed-in -th e-wool enthusia sts were there an d enjoyed a fin e day of riding. Dan Stokes rode a brillian t race o n a 400 Suzuki and defeate d Matt Falcone r alth o u gh the win w as n ot quite so spectac ular. Usually the likes of Bob Gross i show u p to ra ce but Grossi will b e out for ano ther month or so wi th a hand injury and beating Class "C" flat tracker Falcone r and third place, Mike 'ACK' Ackatif f is not quite the same. Falcone r was ridin g a Husky for his first serious attemp t at rough-s tuff racing and Ackatif f, who normall y spends m o st of h is time tuning for Jim Rice, just loves to race in th e famed sand pit. Bruce Kelley, a former membe r of the Fat Ma n racing team u ntil he got skinny, won the 500 J unior Main over John Hoods' 500 MX BSA and Thorton Smith 's Husk y. Smith can usually be found tending the p art s counter at George Hall's shop in Gilroy. but on the weeken ds, it's any kind o f racing. Instead of the u sually-h eavy number s of 250 E xperts , on ly seven signed up. The win went to Pat McCaul on the Swanso n Ossa with a well-d one effort for second put up b y Dave Lewis on a n ew AJS. Lewis was rid ing his first rough scrambl es a n d his first ra ce at the Sand Pit. H e w as ca tch ing McCaul (now a f fec t ionatel y kn own d own Ascot way as Bowling Ball McCaul ) towards th e end but McCaul a d mi tt ed to p a cing himsel f th ro ugh out th e entire 10 laps an d with Lewis d oing his ra cing the hard way, it is doubtful if h e c o u ld h ave go tte n b y even if h e did ca tc h up t o him. John Hood came back for th e win in th e 250 Junior cla ss to give him the d oubles h onor of the d ay. His Ri ckman p erforme d flawlessl y in bea t in g Dan Ha ck a n d Virgil Byers. Ri ch Gracia led all b ut th e imp ortant lap of th e 250 Novice Main an d su ccumbe d t o badly missin g gears a t th e t op of the c o u rse to let Lane Aebi b y for the win , but the se cond was st ill a great job for ano the r scr ambles rider versus th e m oto cro ss element . The next run will b e a n all-out m oto cross and th e r iders sh ould ea sily go o ve r th e 400 mark. CMC score rs will m ost likely b e brough t in to handle the tremend ous in flu x o f riders . Posfpon ed Once Madera Braves Finally Running By Dee A nn Staab MA DERA, CAL., Nov. 28, 1971 - It looked as th ough the Mader a Braves 19th annual Lightwe ight Scramb les, postpo ne d o nce already this year, would be postpon ed again - this time because of rain. The ra ce had been transfer red to the Braves ' club grounds in Madera and th e track w as a sea o f m u d. T he ri ders were there though a nd ready to ra ce ; so after three h o urs and much h ard work the track was in shape and the races were on . lt was a disap p oin t in g day for Jack Jones on all coun ts . Jack t ook the lead on the first lap of the 250cc race and led th e p ac k u n til , with o n ly two lap s to go , he slid out on the first turn and could only make it to fourth place a t the finish line. Joe Brown. who took home th e 250cc perpetu al t ro p h y la st year for keeps, h avin g won it three times, was righ t there to take over first and be the first to win the new perpetu al ligh tweigh t troph y. J ones, als o a contend er for the Bantam weight 125cc perpetu al trophy, fe ll on the first lap of the Main and came from behind to take fift h. Eric Gifford took home the Bantam weight perpetu al trophy. Eric is a new Expert this year a nd r ode a good, fast race. This is also h is first win as an Expert. Maybe those new red leathers help a guy go faster .
