... - Eastwood, Urban Share in Saddleback Showdown ell ~ w Z W ...J U > U By Pete Szilagyi lRVlNE, CAL., Nov. 7, 1971 - Vic Eastwood, AJS works rider, blitzed all the CMC's 500 Experts today at Saddleback Park. Riding a very fast and functional looking 370, Vic cruised around the Saddleback course with an inspired Dave Smith dancing in his shadow. In all three motos Eastwood won the drag race to the top of the start hill. In the first mota his quick lead allowed Vic Eastwood showed the Americans how. him to spend the firSt couple of laps learning the ruts and berms created by the 10 previous races. Morris Malone, on an AJS that aguely resembled Eastwood's, held second place with Smith running third. Chuck Minert was back there somewhere on his Birmingham Droner. Smith, Open Class winner at last week's CMC 'cross, made his move on the third lap. He shot past Malone and set his sights on Eastwood's 30-yard advantage. On the last lap, Smith put on a super burst of speed and .". 1 almost caught Eastwood. Dave's challenge didn't catch Vic off-guard; the N-V ace countered by teaching Smith the finer points of 180 degree tum negotiation. The second mota saw Eastwood slide into a precarious lead. Smith's Maico was hot on his heels and F eets wasn't far ~behind. Dave passed Eastwood as they headed for the liveoak grove switchback and gained about a 10-yard lead on the Englishman. After two unsuccessful moved, Eastwood's Ajay George Erl leads the charge around the Saddleback cou .... Steve Sullivan (32F). Bob Vacenda (777) and Glenville Loyster (711) are in hot pursuit. stormed past Smith and held the advtange until the end. Eastwood encored in the final mota to finish ahead of Smith and Minen. Malone rode well in the fIrst mota but couldn't seem to find his way out of the pack later on. The general consensus of opinion was that Eastwood's superiority was mostly due to his masterful riding on the off-eambers. His scooter also seemed a tad faster. The anticipated duel between prima donna Billy Urban and Eastwood never materialized as Vic opted to sit out the 250 contest. Urban had to be embarrassed by second place money because of trouble in the second heat. Malone got a good stan in the first mota and led for a few laps before being zapped by Billy's Maico. Urban was fixin' to take the lead in the second mo to when his throttle twistgrip slid off the handlebar. This left him in last place with a lot of catching up to do. He worked his way up to the middle of the pack before he was centerpunched by Bill Booth's Maico. Urban had to settle for second last ahead of a crippled Jon Derhammer. Malone went on to win. Urban surprised no one by winning the last moto easily to tally second overall ahead of Brent Rhoades (Hus) and Chuck Bowers (Mai). Urban also dominated the 125 Expert class with some fancy Puch riding. Bill had to play second fiddle behind Chuck Bowers' shiny new Penton in the first mota. Bowers denied Urban the first win, but wasn't able Lo finish higher than third in the last two mota. Bill aced the pack in the remainder of little bore action. Jim Beauchamp, who afways seems to be just a few feet behind compadre Urban, tried to play the spoiler's role. The DKW rider provided a few nervous moments for Urban on the last lap of the third mota. Throughout the race Beauchamp was right behind Urban, but never within the adrenaJin-pumping zone. As they approached the finish, Jim got high on the berm and attempted to rocket past Ut:'an. It was Billy's tum to do some teaching.
