Johnson won their respective classes. The equipment these two lads ride is marginal; in fact. it is the raggediest stuff around, which proves that the only machine you need is one that finishes. Freeman and Johnson have heaps of talent and desire to compete the way they do. CMC MOTOCROSS Ascot Park 100 JR. 125 EX. Kaw Hod Han J. Scotland B. Payne T. Cook Ric X.Schatzlem aul Han J. Scott Smith Nearly Sweeps By Art Loya Photo by Dennis Greene SOUTH GATE, CAL., Nov. 4, 1971 Visiting riders Gary Throneberry of Tulsa, Okla.. Craig Everhart and Marlow Parks of Phoenix, Ariz., Doug Smith and Keith Potter of June Lake, Calif., and Art Carter, Rocky Morales, Fred Wells, Phil KIoer, of Ventura, Calif., found Trojan Speedway bike riders a tough bunch to beat tonight. That is, all but Scott Smith of Riverside, Calif., who came close to a clean sweep of all even ts en tered_ Before the events started, the big question was how the local riders would stand up under the test of outside competition. The answe.r was affirmative and almost unanimous. Smith mounted on a Yamaha sponsored by K & N, streaked to four big wins including the IT and F.T. heats, a trophy dash, and the 250 IT Main Event, never finishing worse than second in all even ts en teredo You might have expected it, but Danny Corbett (Bul), who made his return afteJ: a month's absence, was the spoiler, beating Smith in the 250 F.T. Main, the final event of the evening. The 250 IT feature was highlighted by Smith's sensational exhJbition of handling the tricky double-jump course. Needless to say, Smith stood 'way above the others although one had to admit that tonight the "Riverside Tornado", was meeting with some of the stiffest competition of the season. Following Smith across the finish line at the checkered was Dale Hopkins, Rick Goade, Corbett, Mike Crarke, and Junior riders, Joe Brown and Paul Coberly, allan Bultacos. Despite some of the competition easing somewhat in the 250 F.T. Main after top riders Clarke, who spilled on the first lap, and Hopkins, whose mount experienced mechanical problems forcing the EI Monte rider to the pits on the third lap, Corbett and Smith put on a fierce battle for the lead. Before it was over, Goade, the current point leader, came up to make it a three-way fight. At the checkered it was Corbett, Smith, Goade, Jim Barnes (Yam) and Coberly. Somehow, it always seems to come down to Bob Sanders as the "Big Wheel" in winning the 100 and 125 IT Mains, and the 100 and 125 F.T. Main Events. The rest of the field appeared to just run for the exercise. Tom Doty finished second to Sanders in three of' the four Main Events, while Mark Revels trailed in third two Mains finishing second in one and fourth in another. Junior riders, Jerry Courll (Yam), .-\llen "Buckwheat" Swett (Han), Dean Meyers (Han) and Vern Maxwell (Bul), all won their respective class Main Events, wh:ile Brown, also a Junior, was victorious over Coberly in the 250 IT Main. Not to be denied, Coberly, one of the outstanding Junior riders at the fifth-mile clay oval, was the winner over Dennis Ralph in the Junior class 250 The final pain t season race is scheduled to be run on Thanksgiving Day night featuring a 50-lap Main Event over the IT course for 250cc class bikes. This program will also include the regular racing card of IT & F.T. events. (Results on page 32) .... ~ w Z W ...J U >U
