Dave Pessey (58) and Ron Frescura (44) try a sandwiched pass on Mike Higashi.
By Eric Raits
GARDENA, CAL., Oct. 29, 1971 Usual Ascot mo tocross stalwarts Bill
Payne and Dave Pessy had a tougH nigh t
at the Gardena track to nigh t.
Payne and Pessy were involved in
separate crashes which put them out of
racing for the night. Pessy was taken to
Gardena Memorial for observation but
returned before the chilly night was
over to watch the goings-on with a pale
face. Payne left the track with a little
help from friends and retired for the
evening.
AU the happiness was in Jeff Wright's
camp. Wright, as he has done nearly all
year, easily won the 125 Expert class
and ended up top point winner for the
Ascot season. Wright and friends
celebrated the $750 nrst prize with a

champagne party in the decidedly
beer-like Ascot atmosphere after the
races were over.
Tom Cook and Joe Scotland put up
some resistance to Wrigh t with Cook
winning the first moto but Wright
wasn't headed in the last two. Cook and
Scotland finished two-three in the 125
Expert class.
Danny Hockie had the 250 class to
himself with Pessy out. Hockie enjoyed
300 yard leads most of the night and
beat Al Baline and Jay Peacock.
Mike Todd found easy pickings in the
500 class after Payne's accident. Brian
Lendl got up from tangling in the crash
which sent Pessy to the hospital to
fmish second. Intermediates Greg Owen
and Ron Frescura were third and fourth
overall as Experts and Intermediates ran

combined.
Rod Davis had three strong wins in
the 125 Intermediate class for a clear
WID.
The 250 Intermediates were hardly a
model of consistency. Chris Forbes
ended up on top after Darrel Wood and
Dave O'Haver fought each other for the
apparent win. O'Haver and Wood were
nearly tied for the win coming into the
last moto but Wood never made it to
the starting line, discovering a flat rear
tire as he got ready to go for the third
moto. O'Haver finished too far back to
dislodge any of the top three. Woods
nnish ed second overall in. his first
Intermediate ride while another recent
graduate from the Junior ranks, Joe
Johnston took third.

Don't be misled by motorcycles that are supposedly "race ready" yet
require modifications to the forks, the shocks and the engine. By bikes
that have "Ceriani·type" forks instead of the real thing. By bikes that
hav, a slightly lower price, but that you have to "set up" to make really
competitive. If you are serious about motocross or cross country racing,
look what you get with the real thing, Puch:
