URBAN .KAMIKAZES ... ... CARLSBAD 'CROSSERS CD I ~ w Z W ..J o > o By Pete Szilagyi CARLSBAD. CM...• Oct. 31, 1971 Darkness and cold forced the CMC motocross at Carlsbad to an early conclusion today. The fmal 125 Junior moto had to be cancelled because of darkness and the last couple of races were token contests of two laps each. No complaints though, because most of the remaining riders were huddled in shivering groups waiting for a chance to get out of the cold. 1 was disappointed that Werner Schutz couldn't make it today; the late afternoon chill would have reminded him of home. Temporary Angeleno Schutz is a Gennan MX star who rides CMC crosses. Puch and Maico champ Bill Urban found the crisp fall weather to his liking and went six for six in the 250 and 125 Expert classes. Jim Beauchamp's DKW provided the only test for Urban in the little bore races. Urban got a poor start in the final moto and had to pick his way through the pack. He passed second place rider Mike Dobbs. with a daring move' that almost sent Dobbs tumbling down the steep hill. Urban then set his sigh ts on Beauchamp and passed him on the final lap. Jim tried to regain the lead a few feet before the checkers but crashed and had to push it past the Dave Smith leads the troops at Carlsbad. scorers. Beauchamp got it on all afternoon and placed second overall ahead of Leo Melgren (CZ) and Dobbs. Gary Harris, Tilson Shumate. and John fackler were determined not to let Urban encore in the 250 Expert class. Their efforts went unrewarded as Urban completely dominated the middle motors. Gary Harris rode his CZ to second overall after a p'articularly well·ridden third. Gary was just about the only 250 who could keep up with Bonzai Billy. John fackler turned in three impressive rides but had to play catch·up all afternoon because of a crash in the second moto. Shumate's CZ was always among the front-runners but his consistency only earned him fourth overall behind fackler (Mon). Jon Der-Hammer has to be a real moto-nut. He rode his CZ in all three motos with a cast on his foot. Dave Smith. an American Maico rider. took command of the Open Experts. Smith won the second and third motos handily with Mark Nohr several lengths behind. Dave flubbed the first moto enabling Nohr. also on a Maico. to pocket top loot. Dave had to settle for second place with· Mark Anderson copping third on a Husky. The last couple of race meets have seen a proliferation of Jesus advertising on riders' helmets. Maybe getting religion on the motocross track is akin to the old "no atheists in a foxhole" story. A likely candidate for instant Holy is Husky rider Gary Adelson. Gary endoed his scooter coming off the downhill jump at the west end of the track. Hollywood's best stuntmen couldn't have pulled off a scarier crash. Open-Intennediate Ackelson appeared to be seriously injured but managed to shake it off before the ambulance could get stoked up. Joining Ackelson on the hard luck list was PurSang rider Ron Blanton. Ron entered his 250 in both the 250 and 500 classes. This is a CMC no-no and Blanton had to give up his Open trophy. His perfonnance in the 250 class was somewhat hampered when bike and rider vaporized a stout section of snow fencing. (Results on page 28) Please read this carefully! At. of this date, over 100 requests have been received from the U.S.A. and Europe concerning my performance at race tracks. I will only consider those requests from tracks, both motorcycle and automobile, where the riders and drivers are guaranteed a minimum $5,000 purse. In order to assist the promoter in this attempt to pay all participants a guaranteed purse, one half shall be paid in advance at all tracks by myself.
