It was the first major victory for Dorsch, who will sport the number "22.'" on next season's plates and leathers. It also brings his Main Event win streak to three after winning a IT and Half-Mile in Southern California during the previous weeks. Much of Dorsch's sudden rise has come from Ron Bonner, a Shell Motors mechanic who has tuned Terry's machine all season. Half-way through the race, B<;mner was patiently walking the pit row like an expectant father, giving his "thumbs-up" sign. After h.is spill, Mulder remounted and didn't lose a lap but finished last in the 10 Mile Feature. "Squirrel" earlier broke the one-lap record with a clocking in trials of 26.93 and became an early favorite to get the win at the track where Gene Romero nipped him in July. D ami nan t San Jose winner in the past, Jim Rice, clocked second fast time at 26.97 and Dorsch was third at 26.98. Keith Mashburn led throughout the first Expert Heat with Mulder a hard-pressed second ahead of Dave Smith. Then Sehl won the second over Lee and Frank Gillespie. Denny Palmgren held the lead for four laps in the third heat before Dorsch, who was fifth after the first lap, took over to walk away. Hansen managed second and Burres third to transfer directly to the Main. Bart Markel made the lead in the first turn of the semi but Rice passed him before the lap was completed and the pair held those transfer positions throughout the five-lapper. Mark Williams took third to round out the Main Event card. Gene Romero was fourth during the first half of the race but engine troubles forced him out of action on lap four_ RESULTS 20·LAP FEATURE Terry Dorsch Dave Hansen Jim Rice Bart Markel Robert E. The distance was equivalent to 20 cars, although the autos were not placed between the ramps. During the pre-attempt interview over the P.A. system, Super Joe showed complete determination by flatly stating he no longer wosried about the landing ramp because "he was having a specially made ramp being prepared which would revolu tionize the sport" of motorcycle leaping. Because of this ramp, Super Joe even further stated that next week he would be able to jump the equivalent of 30 cars. This brought some hecklers out of the woodwork. He also mentioned' that "there was so much short notice for this jump that I've been forced to use my number-two machine for the record attempt, but I'm sure my Triumph Bonneveille will do the job." . After a brief taped interview with Keith Jackson of ABC's Wide World of Sports, Joe mounted his steed and made his scheduled two passes by the ramps. As the crowd became expectant, Super Joe sped out of the No.4 mile tum and headed for the ramps, but pulled out of line at the last momen t, which drew a few more heckles from the crowd. Two more times the same thing happened and the crowd, already disbelieving the youthful jumper, began to expect him to withdraw for some reason. It didn't happen as, Super Joe, on his sixth drive toward the ramp, went up it, lofted himself in perfect fligh t and softly floated to the middle of the landing ramp, plumped down squarely on both wheels, rolled down the ramp and skidded to a halt going into turn 1 of the half-mile. He turned his machine about, rode back toward the landing ramp and halted at the end of the straight and triumphantly pumped both arms into the air in a large victory "V" sign. The crowd went hysterical with many leaping the fence and forcing their way towards him. Joe got his Triumph going again and rolled up to the top of the landing ramp amid wild cheers. After shaking hands with those fans and friends near him, he took off both gloves and tossed them to the crowd then eventually got off the ramp and made his way to his van where he relaxed. Super Joe Einhorn will attem"pt to make arrangements with Evel Killevel for the much-publicized $25,000 .Challenge.
