From the standpoint of watching road racing the Ontario meeting was the finest - road racing ever presen ted. Hopefully the February return date is not a rumor, but a fact. Road racing in America has finally arrived and the seven events, especially the Ontario race, proves it. The results are not official at this tiroe due to the fact that Eddie Mulder, who finished in 21st position, lodged a protest after the race on his final position. Therefore, the AMA officials did finalize the first ten places as Mulder did agree that he was not that high. Lee, nicknamed the "Little General", picked up his only National Points of the season and he did it spectacularly by winning the second and final Short Track ational of the season at Santa Fe Speedway. Jiro Rice bounded ahead of Dick Mann in the points race by taking fourth while Romero and Mann were unable to make the 25-lap feature. The moment of truth came early. Cooper wilJ return with a brand new BSA. Carruthers, as expected, won the lightweight 125 mile event on Saturday in another near photo-finish. He dueled with New Zealand's Ginger Malloy right down to the wire, winning by two bike lengths. l\1alJoy, 1:I)e only rider to ever beat Kel in 250cc racing in the states, came from far back to catch the flying Aussie in th e final laps. The event was stopped early due to a flash rain cloud and was resumed an hour later. The wait was worthwhile as the two riders gave a preview of things to come the following day. Carruthers closed out his year in America winning six of the seven ligh tweigh t finals and six of the se en heat races. He also fmished in the top ten in the final National Point Standings - the first foreign rider to ever do so. The Junior big bike fmal was a two rider duel also. Mike Lane and his team-Kawasaki was the disguised eventual winner. Mike picked up $7,000 from Kawasaki plus the prize money. Kenny Roberts. Yamaha, tried for the win and was right there before dropping out with less than two laps to go. He tried to run all the way without stopping for gas and the fuel starved engine developed a little round hole in one of the pistons just short of the fmish. California's Howard Lyngaard won his third ovice race of the year on a Yamaha, defeating Washington's Steve Pocono, Pa., Aug. 22 Yvon DuHamel tried to put a dent in the Carruthers-Mann duel on the asplialt and he almost succeeded until his thirsty Kawasaki had to pull into the pits while leading to take on more fuel When he re-entered the course, he was in third and that's where he finished behind, guess who? Cal Rayborn won his first National of the year. The National was halted after lap seven because conditions were so bad that riders couldn't see where they were going.
