Sunday was Cyclesports Park's last ride; the track will not see another race - at least not soon. Bob and Jan want to travel a bit, have some time to !hemselves. and enjoy motocross as participants instead of operators. It was a good day. Top riders came from all over Texas and Louisiana. The last race was by invitation only, so Bob picked the cream of the crop to make a final showing, and a spectacular it was, with an all-star cast. Riders such as Robi Holbert, Jack O'Leary. Jack Hicks. Fred Hanna, Steve Hackney, Robert Tuggle, and Ed Abbott came to race. Steve Hackney dominated the 125cc Experts. His performance, as usual, was top notch as he blasted around the track on a new 125cc Penton. leaving lots of space and lots 0 f riders behind him. Fifteen year-old Steve has become Wonder Boy of the 125cc class, going faster than anyone around this area, and probably faster than any'one else in the state of Texas. Steve has developed the expertise of an older. more experienced rider' and can make the smaller bike work for him. There was no competition for Steve in his class. However, Ralph Robertson (Pen) and Mike Brown (Pen) did have a battle for second place. Mike is an l;)tperienced rider, and one of the better riders in this class. but Robertson managed to edge him out for second place. Greg Graham (Puch) surprisingly did a fifth place this week, which is very unusual. Greg is usually out front or running second to Steve Hackney. The 250cc class caught ---: Motorcycle. 5.le. Ricketts Socks Sprockets By Carol Witt Photo by Karen Hartman WICHITA, KANS., Oct. 3, 1971 - The Sprockets chalked up another great day of racing. One outstanding feature of the Sprockets track is that it is never the same, offering a challenge to all riders. It has been called a fast hard trac k. The first moto of the day was 125cc Jr. class. Karen Hartment laid aside her camera to enter this event, riding a Yamaha she made a good showing corning in second. First place was taken by Marvin Jones also on a Yamaha. First off the line in the 125 Sr. was Mike LeValley, riding a DKW, followed by David Dixon on a Yamaha and Gary Clement on a Carabela in the third position. LeValley held the lead for the first nine laps and due to a slow rider falling, LeValley and Clement ran into him and lost their position to Marvin Whitham. riding a Yamaha who came on in to receive the checkered flag. The second and third heat showed a close battle between Craig Bills, of LeValley, Whitham and Dixon with Whitham taking a first for the day. In the 250cc Sr., Steve Ricketts (Mai) and Mike Barry (Mai) , had a good battle 'but Ricketts ended up in the f'1rst spot and Jay Dunlap (Hus) moved into second by the end of lap 1. They held these positions for two laps with Gary Witt charging from eigh th to fourth. (Please tu'1' to page 34)
