The annual event was sponsored by the Owyhee Motorcycle Club and 100 Idaho Amateur riders competed on the professional track that held last week's Trans-AMA. Behind UbI's Bultaco, Randy Ruetzel, on a Husqvarna, polled points for second spot, followed by Jay Smith (Husky) and Don Willhite (Ossa). In the Open Expert division, the lead played musical chairs during the first heat but Bruce Harris put it together on his Husky and took home tlte tall one. Terry Hartung (Mai) grabbed the second place trophy ahead of competitor Mark Tennyson on a Yamaha. Mark Shepardson, also of Boise, won the 125cc Expert class astride a Yamalta. Steve Olsen (Rickman) and Roy Terry (Yam) completed the top three. A large group of B class contenders gave spectators a show of spills and thrills on the rough mile-and-a-half track. Out of 31 participants in the 125cc class, Bob Hansun steered ltis Rickman to a perfect score and first-place trophy. Kent Exley (Puc) and Randy Lee (Yam) wrestled for second but Exley found 24 more points in his pocket to best the Yamaha. Greeves-mounted Rex Maughan purchased first place trophy with high points in the 250cc B class and Tom Watson (Yam) and Ken Krall (Hus) took second and third honors. All three heats were marred by yellow flags and a multi-bike crash in the final heat sent Steve Hensly, Mountain Home, to the hospital with a possible back injury. Hensly had compiled enough points in the first two motos to win a fourth. Open B class rider, Ron Stevens (Mai) found the answer in the last two motos and took home the first place trophy. Mirco Seminich (Hus) and Gary Allen Dust Billows on McQueen Hill , By Will. Palmer PRESCOTT, ARIZ., Oct. 3, 1971 - The men with X-ray vision reigned supreme as the dust billowed up on the main straight at the start of each heat as 130 riders gathered at SlaughJerhouse Gulch Raceway. This was the first motocross race on the course designed by Steve McQueen and built by the Mile High Motorcycle Club of Prescott. The club had attempted to obtain a water truck for track preparation but did not succeed. This didn't hinder them or the riders though, as each heat was closely fought and the race day went quickly and with ease. The 250 and Open class races, both Junior and Senior, provided the most outstanding display of hard-nosed riding and competitive spirit, although the 125 classes were highly competitive and well-ridden. Brian Ross and Byron Boaz dueled throughout the Open Senior heats ahoard Maico and AJS respectively. Ross took top honors and Boaz a close second. Running full bore past the johns and up McQueen Hill, the brutal power of all the Open class bikes proved a tremendous crowd pleaser. Several spectacular endos occurred in the dish just past the finish line as riders cast aside their fears to rush nat out past the flagman to secure their positions. Rick Hatch traveled across Arizona from Snowflake to take top honors in the Open Junior race on a Yamaha. He had a battle all the way as this class proved to be both crowded and exciting. All riders questioned about the new-born moto crouse were flipped ahout it and called this little 6/10 mile rollercoaster a great one. The next regularly scheduled event at Slaugh terhouse Gulch Raceway will be the season point standings finale on October 24th. It will be a TT scrambles event and should be the biggest of the year. (Results on page 36) ~ u o ~ w (Yam) took second and third. Boise fans got a look into the future in the Mini Bike competition. Eight-year-old Loren Shockey gave winner Ronnie Lee some tail-gating but Lee's Honda pulled ahead in the third heat to capture high points. A scent of perfume was present in the 125 B class when Leslie (spelled like a girl) Ruscitto ran with the big boys. The Owyhee MIC awarded her a special Sportsman trophy. Or do you call it a Sportswomen trophy? Z W ..J U >- U RESULTS 125 JR.
