r - - - - 5 0 cents - - - - . , YCLESPORTS everyone off guard. Speculations were being made all morning as to who would win - Robi Holbert or Jack O'Leary. Well, surprise, surprise - Fred Hanna (Hus) took IIrst place overall and did a beautiful job of it. Consistency counts as far as Fred is concerned. He kept his cool, rode evenly, and didn't try to impress anyone with cut antics such as wheelies. Sunday's race was muddy and. wet, and Fred played his cards accordingly. He held on steadily, and worked his way up in the crowd, slipping around fallen bikes and mud-soaked riders for the IIrst place spot. In second was Jack O'Leary, who rides like a madman. Jack is ex tremely good in the mud, but Sunday wasn't his day for first. He was fast, and quick, but unlike Fred he fell some, and got out of shape quite a bit. According to another 250cc Expert rider, racing right behind Jack is like nothing in the world; it's a truly hairy experience. He held onto the handlebars with both hands, cranking it on, and there are his feet, waving behind him in the breeze like the national banner. Holbert (Hus) was in third place, slipping and sliding around the track in his usual style. It would be a real toss-up to see wbo is the wilder O'Leary or Holbert. With the two of them racing together, the crowd got an even treat. The Open Expert battle was between Ed Abbott (CZ) and Bob Hanna (Hus). Hanna is a very good mud rider, but so it seems, is Ed. Bob held a first for quite sometime, but Abbott moved on up and held first for the rest of the day. Jake De Boe, who didn't do too well in the 250 class, came in third in the Open, riding much better on the bigger bike. Robi Holbert couldn't keep his CZ together and just gave up, with a disgusted look and a shrug of the shoulders. DESERT PEOPLE SH'NE fOR DESERT PEOPLE By Kent Nicholls SEARCHLIGHT, NEV., Oct. 3,1971 The Desert People M.C. of .Las Vegas pride themselves on their non·road race desert races. Their Championship Hare and Hound, held today, was no exception. The roughest desert in Southern Nevada and maybe the whole world is located near the small mining town of Searchlight. Some people arrived the night before as Desert People had arranged for a neat camping area. Saturday night, some nice guy spread the rumor that Searchlight was the former site of a rattlesnake meilt canning plant, which surely helped the campers sleep a little better. At 9;30 Sunday morning, 192 desert racers with the image of the $650 purse in their minds, charged the smoke bomb some four miles away. After the smoke, the course went over some little rolling hills. Then. the fun began with a very narrow, steep, rocky downhill that proved to be a bad bottleneck. People' were in several different stages of crashing. Desert People figured that the riders were tired of going down hill. So, they came up with a group of ·hills that were so steep and loose that at the riders' meeting, they bragged that no 100 could make it up under its own power. They were righ t. After these ups and downs the course leveled out into about 80 more miles (103 total) or rider-pounding, machine-destroying desert, complete with long deep sandwashes and every .r.ock in the whole wide world. Spectators who gathered at the finish saw Californian Tom Smith on his trusty Husky get first overall. Another big Husky rider, Dave Laca, trucked on to get second Open Ex. and second overall. The 250 class was dominated by Tom Dillon (Husky) who got a fantastic third overall. The 125cc class was won by Casy Folks (Pen) with Bobby Davidson right behind him. To give. you some idea of what kind of rider Bobby really is, he got a flat tire before he got to the smoke bomb. Even so, he managed to get 3. 13 th overall. In all, 138 people managed to finish Desert People's challenging desert race. Everyone who participated in this fine desert event had a great time, and I personally want to congratulate Desert People on a job well done.
