Since this was to be the first true state championship event several new innovations were tried in order to make it special; unfortunately, soaring 100 degree heat and vandals, who removed a critical group of course markers, marred the weeks of planning and work of laying the vent out. Northern California was well represented by a strong group of riders and vacationing British ace, Dennis Boot, turned out to ride exhibition on the B.N. Montesa. Twenty sections tested the championship contestants and, due to the heat, their event was cut from three loops to two. In spite of this, John Walters and Steve Darrow were the only riders to finish under the 4:30 deadline, sacrificing valuable points to get in on time. As a result they were awarded with first and second respectively with low point man Lane Leavitt third with 76, Rich Bledsoe fourth with 78 and Bob Nichelson fifth with 81. Terry Griffiths led the Experts home with 109 to the 114 of second·place Jim Sheehan. His second gives Jim the points to transfer to the Master class. The Amateurs did their thing in eight separate sections; Jim Laudernan. with his first ride on a Sherpa T, raised some eyebrows by winning the Amateur claos with a 21. Jack Armstrong, (we all know who Jack Armstrong is) took second with 26 and John Boudeau third with 31. Bernie Schreiber, (Mighty Mouse) won the ultra light class, beating John Adcox, 43 to 47. They say that Bernie doesn't dab very often because he can't reach the ground. Richard Lumsden laid out a special trials for the kids and they really had a ball. Randy Radar lost only 11, while Donald Sommers was second with a distant 19. With two more rounds to go the championship is still up for grabs. The next round is at Hollister Nov. 21; since that is home ground for the Northern riders things could take a decided swing in their favor. RESULTS MASTER Walters Darrow Leavitt Bledsoe . Ma Nature Gives AeA Dust-Free Motocross By George Andersen POMONA, CAL. 17, 1971 - What looked like a rained·out event for sure turned out to be a picture perfect day for motocross. Night rains that provided the much·needed moisture for O'Steen's course subsided by opening time. The result was a nearly dust-free track. The surprise of the day would have to be the unexpected large turn-out of 100cc bikes. TJte last time a division of 100cc bikes tackled this course, only one bike was left standing at the end of the day. Not so this time. The top six riders were exceptional. First place overall went to Bob Stem on a Hodaka, after he took three straight wins. John Skifstrom did the next best thing by taking three seconds for a second overall. The next four riders were pretty well mixing it up all day. Richard Roberts, on a Super Rat, had some troubles keeping on his bike in the second moto, but mana!!:ed a third for the day. Ralph Agajanian (Suz) took fourth. The field of 125 Intermediates and 125 Seniors saw some real heads-up riding by three riders; Ray Lopez, Brad McKee, and what some people believe to be the oldest living motocross rider, this side o'f Bismarck, North Dakota, Dick Frampton. Lopez was riding with a Sachs engine mounted in a Suzuki frame. A very fast combination. McKee and Frampton were glued onto some very potent Bultacos. When the dust cleared at the end of the third moto, Lopez came out on top with two frrsts and a third. Dick Frampton took a very impressive second. In the 250cc class the Schulz brothers were up to their old tricks again. John Schulz took frrst Junior and brother Les took first Intermediate. Both of them .ride Rickmans and really have this course wired. .'Next Sunday, A.CA. motocross will resume down at Carlsbad Raceway with ... very good chance 'of having the sprinkler system going.
