Perhaps some disap.pointments were for the Brothers Bast. Steve is California State Champion and Mike had just clinched the United States Championship last night in Costa Mesa. "We just brought out a couple junkers," explained Harlan. They are due for a rest, anyway. Division II speedster Fred Ortez turned out a pleasantly surprising performance. Ortez won two heats in a row to transfer to the Handicap Semi and aced Ed Williams to get into the Main, where he finished seventh. Likewise, Reuben Benites came ou t of the ranks to pose a serious threat to the more experienced riders. Benites, Keeter, and Black Knight Bruce Haserot put on the best race of the program with a deadlock in a Handicap Semi. Haserot wen t high, low, and everywhere else before he got around Keeter and leader Benites was next on his list. Before he could make his move Keeter co ~ .... Ol picked them both off to take a commanding lead. Benites and Haserot continued the scuffle all the way into the last tum. Reuben lost his balance but gained the Hard Luck trophy for his fine effort. Speedway is a sure crowd-pleaser and, following Tanner's rousing success, Gavin Trippe and his friends will bring Ivan Mauger, Barry Briggs, and other European stars to Ascot October 22 on the quarter-mile. . Well, there was a whole bunch of MX riders doing a whole bunch of sluddi'!lt tonight at EI Toro Speedway's MX event. The track was set and as slippery as that well known greased pig. It looked like a bunch of ducks with feet extended trying to land on a frozen pond. CALIFORNIA STATE CHA,MPIONSaIP 1/2 MILE DIRT TRaCK. T8E MOST SPECTaCULaR S80W IN L.a. By Buzz Baty As one rider goes down he slides into the pack, and zingo a strike! Morris Malone, 250 AJS, held everything together to win the 250 class for Experts, but he rode the 500 class as well and when the pack hit the 180 degree turn off of the short track's second comer, four riders went down, among them Greg Smith on his Maico. Malone was coming up fast, and with the track as slippery as it was, Morris couldn't maneuver and he hit Smith dead in the middle of the back. Greg rode the rest of the night but his heart just wasn't in it. Bill Payne was the overall winner with a 1-2-3 parlay on his 400 Maico. We have had a girl type rider making her presence felt Friday nigh 15. She is Johanna Stenerson, No. 839, riding a IOOcc Hodaka, and she looks pretty good - both ways. ~aja Wins again!
