KENNEDY·-· SHORT TRACK CHAMP By James Brammer SANTA ROSA, CAL., Sep,t. 25, 1971 Ted Kennedy, Jr. carned home the point champion trophy for 1971 Amateur short track racing at the Chris Beck Arena. Kennedy is the son of Ted . and Donna who have Ted's Wheel Alignment & Brake Service in Petaluma. The vigorous youth on a Suzuki out of Cycle West won his points in four fIrsts and one second place finish in six meeting held during the year by ~e orth Bay Motorcycle Club. Three of the firsts were from the 100cc Novice class before being advanced to Junior. In two outings as a Junior, he finished first September 11 in the 200cc unior fmal and second in the '" c.. .... 0> ti o ~ w Z W ..J U >- U Ted Kennedy. 125cc wrap-up Junior final on September 25. Jim Coats (Yamaha) also from Petaluma won the final race after con troversy. The would-be winner was suspended for using a piston from a 250cc engine in the 125cc class. Another controversy raged over a charge that Kennedy intentionally knocked a rider down in the race. Kennedy said he was sorry and didn't intend to collide with the rider who fell. Referee Ray Bennett saw the incident and agreed. This protest was withdrawn. Midway through the Expert fInal won by Dan Davies, Rarldy Booth and Allen Yarrow were caugh t in an inside comer squeeze that took down four Experts, blocking the track. On the restart, Dennis Robinson held his front wheel on the inside to Dan navies in the corners but riding steadily, Davies wouldn't opn up the gap for the challenging Robinson who finished second. .. ... M New rider on a Harley-Davidson, Larry Ostarello from Santa Rosa was in the action, leading the early laps of the 250cc Novice final before heing overtaken by Al Rirsh ton and then Harry Young. Ostarello came in third smiling like a winner. Stylist Greg Ferguson, appearing in his first race at Santa Rosa since heing advanced to a Junior, won the 250 final on the speedway bike using a 250cc Triumph engine. Missing were the full lock slides he had used on previous appearances as a Novice, but he was driving into the comers this time with such speed that the handlebars were til ted below his knee. Dring's Wondrous Weekend .. By James Brammer VALLEJO, CAL., Sept. 12, 1971 Harry Dring warmed up with second place in the 250cc Expert class of the IT scrambles at Vallejo Friday. Appeared at Santa Rosa on Saturday night to take first place over the 250 Expert short trackers. He then returned to Vallejo on Sunday afternoon to take fIrst in the 2500c Expert class of the Richmond Ramblers' IT scrambles at the Vallejo Speedway. Starting from th~ pole position in the Ramblers' scrambles, he easily broke into the lead with John Hearne in second and Kent Johnson moving up from the outside tlirough the pack to third. Johnson then went on to pass Hearne before .falling in the chase, " c • leaving Hearne in second and Dermis Rohinson in third for the finish. In the 500cc Expert f'mal, it was Dan Leet chased all the way by Kent Johnson. Johnson moved in beside Leet twice in an attempt to pass, but taking the outside pasition he could not make it. Leet had a 30 foot lead at the checkered flag. Haid-eharging Mark Dunaway moved through the entire pack of riders to second position in one lap in the 5000c Junior final. He then slid down, taking a deep puncture wound in his left arm. Harry Young move1 into the winning position of the 175 Novice fInal when leader Mark Lamke felI. Lamke recovered in time to fInish third. (Results on page 32)
