Carnegie .Climb By Clayton Cameron LIVERMORE, CAL., Sept. 18, 1971 The..Saturday night hillclimb at Carnegie Cycle Park was a success. One hundred nine riders signed up to ride the timed 350-foot hill laid out on the side of a 600-foot slope. Nobody made the 600 feet but a lot of riders went through the ligh ts at the 350-foot level. The best time of the night was a 7.467 -second blast by Jim True on a 883cc Sportster who has to be considered one of the best hillclimber's on the West Coast. A close second place was Frank Durso on is hot 650 BSA at 7.606- seconds. Jim True also took top honors in the 250cc lightweight class riding'a 250cc Ossa at 9.064 seconds, which beat all of the heavyweights in the 251·500 class and a lot of the Open bikes. I • By James Brammer SANTA ROSA, CAL., Sept. 25, 1971 District 36 officials zeroed in on the fmal Amateur short track race of the year at Santa Rosa finding one prominent Junior rider ~ith an ~versized piston in the 125cc Junior fmal. However, the rider, Billy Wilson, was not on the same bike which he won the season point trophy for the 100cc class at Vallejo. Wilson passed Jim Coats in the final so swiftly that official, Leonard Vestal claimed that couldn't be a 125cc engine. North Bay M.C. referee Ray Bennett confrrmed the claim by measuring the piston to be 77mm which he stated was oversized and took Wilson's Sportsman's card. Bennett talked another rider out of filing a protest in the same race against Ted Kennedy. The charges were that Kennedy collided with a rider intentionally. Bennett had seen the contact and said he believe it couldn't be avoided and therefore would oppose the protest. The rider withdrew his protest.
