Brass By Sue Bailey EUREKA, CAL., Sept. ll, 1971 Wilson's Saw & Cycle Team of Fortuna, Calif., took home four of the six four·foot high championship trophies awarded at the Northwest Championships at Redwood Acres' tonight Bultaco mounted Ray Crivello raced his way to victory in both the Amateur Flat Track class and the Amateur Scrambles class. Team member, Gary Thompson of Eureka was awarded the Expert Flat Track win. Novice Jack Wilson, also atop a Bultaco, was high point in the Scrambles. Kawasaki Expert Ray Beck finished on top in the Scrambles and Carl Ballew, riding a Montesa, took the high point Novice Flat Track trophy. Crivello was hard to beat, although he finished second to Mike Thrash in the 250cc Amateur Main. This still gave him enough poin Is to end up on top. In the Trophy Dash, Roger Robison pushed ahead at the start with Thrash close behind. Crivello made his move in the second lap, passed. Thrash, held his position until the last curve before the final flag, when he poured it on and passed Robison for the troph y. He led all the way in the 250cc Flat Track, followed by Thrash, who was really hot and close behind, but couldn't quite pass champion Crivello. Fred Pugh, also a member of Wilson's Saw & Cycle Racing Team, was high point man in the Amateur Flat Track class, until this race. His 250 Bultaco seized in the fll'st qualifying heat. He completely rebuilt his engine prior to the Main Event, was o}1e minute too late for the green flag, joined the race in the second lap and finished it. In the flat track race, he lost his pipe and it cost him the championship. Roger Robison was triumphant with his Triumph in the 350-open Amateur Trophy Dash. He pushed ahead at the line and Marion Matlock took it away from hin the second lap. Robison wasn't to be stopped and never gave up. It was so close at the checkered flag, a decision had to be made. Robison came out the victor. hi the Main Event, Clarence Oliver, after going over the high side of the curve in the qualifying heat during the last lap, pushed his Yamaha ahead of the pack. Matlock challenged Oliver from the beginning. He almost wheeled by him on the straightaway in the third lap, and finally made it in the same lap on the curve after the jump. Excited Oliver fell back, missed the tum and was out of the race. This put Robison into second position. He was pushing Matlock hard; both riders were determined to win. Robison finally took over on the first curve in the fifth lap for th~ trophy. In the 250 Novice Main, Stan Thrash and Lawrence Sorenson went down coming off the jump. Thrash flopped and Sorenson stumbled to keep from hitting him. Glenn Comer had already taken first away from Thrash on the curve just before the jump, but this left a clear track for him to go on to win. Glenn Comer and Carl Ballew were ·neck·in·neck in the 250 Novice Flat Track Main. Wayne Adams took the early lead with Comer and Ballew leaving him behind in the first lap. Ballew sneaked by on the inside of the second curve in the fifth lap to lead until the seventh lap. On the far straightaway, Comer took over. It was a close race all the way to the fmish line. Corner did it. Ballew came in a close_ second. ELDER ON THE MEND Bill Elder, National Number 86, who was seriously injured last month in a collision at the OreJrOn Sidewinder'.
